What Is patter than "Bmma-Qse"
for a machine gun, tor Instance? Or
"O-Pip" for as observation post?
On must admit that there's some
class to these terms and while you-ve
got your gogglers on this column
just take it from me that there's
more pep of the same mustard y stan
dard where this came from.
A "whUe-baag" la a shell ot such
high velocity that Us whlas and Us
bang are almost simultaneous. A
"dud" Is a shell which falls to ex
plode. A bun handout is a "dud"
meal and a gink with a bone head
Is a "dud" bo. The tip you got on
the fitly that was backed off the
boards by the other nags on tbe
back stretch, was a "dud" smoke.
A trench mortar Is a "Joe-Emma"
and the tbig black ball at high ex

a "plum pudding." An antiaircraft
gun is an "Archibald" or an "Ar

bursts with a fussy yellow puff of
smoke Is a "wooly bear."
To the English Tommy a German
Is a "Frits" and Frits" he is to the
Canadians. The Scotch call him an
"Allyman" (probably after the
French "Allemand"), but he is no
body of the Irish but a . "Jerry."
A British staff officer Is a "brass
hat' perhaps tocause of the gold
braid on his cap, and Tommy's own
headgear, the steel helmet he must
wear inside the shell area, is a "tin

Another name given the stsff of
ficers Is the "lilies' supposedly on
the theory that they toll not.
"Blighty" Is England, and "going

last specimen of spondulix, Is a "lit

Is a small wound which rovslld you

'Wlghty" for the very simple res
son that It puts a crimp in your
traveling capacity snd gives you bil

wound Is 'very bad, so bad that stim
ulants are necessary before you are
operated, you will go to "Resurrec

"Ach-Kmma" Is morning. "Plp

French word "solr.v When a thing

traveling circus." A battle, a raid,
or any operation against the enemy
of a similar nature. Is a "show." A
"dud show" means that the stunt did
not "come-off" In . plain English
the attackers pulled a lemon.
When Tommy says "Frits got his

The guns of largest caliber are
"Grandpas." The next largest are
"Grandmas," Of course "Daddy" Is

"I'ncle." "Aunty" and the "kids" fol

The kids have all sorts of names:
