IFLOUR PRICE IS
HEADING SKYWARD I t A
Chicago, Aug. 10. Advauvlng
wheat prices hit the American house
wife hard today. The bousowlfe who
buys a big sack of flour today will
pay from 10 to 15 cents a sack more
for It that she did yesterday. Flour
sold at 17.25 a barrel for th bak
ers' grade. Yesterday It sold at I8 60.
In the last month flour has advanced
82 a barrel and the bak-rs already
are considering abandonment ef the
five cent loaf and the sale of a 10
cent loaf, slightly smaller thnn tho
present "dlma" loaf.
While the flour market was ad
vancing today wheat prices alter
nately rose and foil amid excited buy
ing aad selling. Scenes In the wheat
pits were like those ot the days when
big traders sought to corner the
whole world's wheat supply. Every
one was trying to buy wheat except
those conservative ones who sold to
dsy at prices 10 to 15 cents higher I
than they bought It at.
Just when things had quieted d
Jown
to ordinary trading somebody broke
Into the pit with a rumor that the
government had planned an embar
go on shipments ot wheat, because
cropa were s0 small. This stsrted
things again. The market soared for
minute. Then someone else had
another flock of rumors and prices
dropped again. It was see-saw up
and down throughout the market ses
sion. Brokers tn close touch with
eondttlons discounted rumors that1
two dollar wheat was In sight. They
said It would stick somewhere around
a dollar and a half until something,
nobody knows what, throws snother
bomb Into the market. At noon
September wheat was up half over
the opening at 148. December was
down at 147, and May down 2 at 155.
In the sarly hours May Jumped 3
cents from last night's close, but
dropped when those who held much
whest unlosded to get their profits.
