Amertoa's Appalling Fire Lea.
Every man, woman and child In the
United 8tates pays $3 a year for Are
waste. If on a certain day of the year
a government official should go to the
average family of live iteraous and pre
sent a bill for $13 aa the auuual Ore
tax of the family, there would be a
universal protest agniust the tax and
against the carelessness whku makes
possible a yearly fire waste of 230,
000.000 In this country, nig manufac
turers aud big men-bant know that
the fire expense to which they are sub
jected Is a drain on all the people, but
because It is iudlrect the average per
son ts not coiisi'lou tie In paying a tax.
Let the musses cure realize thnt every
time they buy a lint, a pair of shoes
or a suit of clothes or anything which
goes through the regular chnnnels of
Industry, production, distribution and
exchange, they are pitying a part of
the country's enormous lire tax, aud
fire prevention would become the order
of the day. Leslie's.
The Duck.
A little schoolgirl In Michigan has
written the following essay on the
duck:
"The duck is a low heavy set bird,
lie is a mighty poor singer having a
coarse voice caused by getting so ninny
frogs in his neck and be likes the wa
ter and carries a toy balloon In bis
stomach to keep from sinking the Duck
has only two legs and they are set so
far back on bis running gears by na
ture that they come pretty nenr miss
ing bis body souitf ducks when they
get big curls on their bills are called
drakes and don't hnvo to act or hutch
but just loaf and go swimming and
eat everything in sight if I were to be
a duck I would rather be a drnko they
have a wide bill like they use it for a
spade they walk like a drunk mnn they
