Divorce Is Granted
Judge Calkins came over from
Jackson county Monday morning and
held a short session of the circuit
court, returning to Medford on the
(afternoon train. Besides the hearing
of a few motions and demurrers In
pending cases, a decree of divorce
was granted in the action instituted
by Jefferson A. Wlmer against his
wife, Minnie B. Wlmer.

J. S. Thompson, a resident of Mer
lin, dropped dead Saturday afternoon
while walking to his home after a
visit to this city. Mr. Thompson had
come to Grants Pass with a neighbor,
but was walking home along the
Southern Pacific railroad track. When
beyond the summit, he stopped to
talk with the members of the section
crew from Merlin, and while thus en
gaged fell dead in the center of the
track without warning. The section
crew put forth every possible effort
to restore life In the stricken man,
but without avail.
The deceased has lived in and near
Merlin for a number of years, own
ing a farm north of the village, and
I was between 50 and 60 years of age.
He has recently been employed by
the Rogue River Orchard company.
He was a respected citizen of the
I community, and leaves a wife and
daughter to mourn his decease. The
funeral services were held at Merlin
at 11 o'clock today, being conducted
(by Rev. S. A. Douglas of the Baptist
church of Grants Pass.

Simultaneous services held last
night In Newman Methodist and
Christian churches were of unusual
interest. Good audiences filled both
churches. At the Methodist church
Rev. G. A. Taggart preached on the
subject of "Redemption." At the
Christian church Rev. S. A. Douglas
preached on the topic "The Authori
tative Message of Christ for This
Generation."

Miner Is Injured
L. Rasmusson, employed at the
Layton mine on the upper Applegate,
was severely Injured Saturday even
ing when he was burled nnder a cave
in at the mine. .Workmen uncovered
the unfortunate man as rapidly as
possible, preventing his suffocation,
hut he was found to bo suffering from
a dislocated right hip, the loss of
four of his front teeth, and bruises
over other portions of his body. He
was attended by Dr. Loughrldge, and
was brought to the hospital In this
city, where he Is now being cared for.

steamer Navajo was purchased to
day from the Swayne & Hoyt com
pany for $510,000. The Navajo was
built four years ago for half this
price. Swayne & Hoyt are withhold
ing the name of the purchaser. The
Impression Is that an agent of the
British government was the pur
chaser. Charter and purchase prices
for vessols are soaring to unheard of
heights because of the war.
RIDES 20 MILES WITH
1 BADLY BROKEN LEG
Redding, Cal., Mar, 13. Ross
Houston had a big reputation for
grit today. Thrown from his motor
cycle while riding near Pitt river,
his leg was broken at the ankle so
the bones protruded. Hopping on
one foot, he re-mounted bis machine
and drove 20 miles to Redding, with
the shattered limb dangling 'against
bis machine. .
FRENCH AEROPLANES DROP
BOMBS ON RAILWAY STATION
Paris,' Mar. 13. Thirty bombs
were dropped by French aeroplanes
on Conflaus railway station, lt was
announced today. The machines re
turned unharmed.
