The county court has decided that
prisoners held In the county Jail must
hereafter work tor their dally bread
or all they will get will be bread and
water. The state law provides that
prisoners may be required to wort,
thus spoiling the soft snap of three
square meals a day and nothing to
do but roll cigarettes, play seven-up,
or read from morning till night,
while the taxpayers paid the hills.
A sentence to Jail, or the laying out
of a fine in the bastlle may lose its

school have- entered upon a cam
paign to obtain a gymnasium. They
are going to ask the patrons of the
district to add soma part of a mill
to the tax levy when the budget la
approved at the annual school meet

Colorado, Sun publishes as a matter
of news some facts concerning the
beet industry there. , A copy ot the

has the following telling of the out
come of the year's beet campaign
there:
"Next Monday beet growers iffhe
.Wellington district will , receive
check from the Great Western Sugar
company., aggregating $100,000.
These will be In payment for beets
delivered at the four dumps during
the month of October. The weather
has been ideal for the harvest and
delivery , of beets has been continu
ous, making this the largest payment
ever made here for. a single, month's
delivery. The ; beet grower ; and
workers will be In funds and business
generally will hum for a while.
".Yesterday Superintendent Osborn
estimated that .80 , per .cent of the
beets in this district had been har
vested and delivered, and that, if
weather conditions remained normal
the work would toe practically over
by Thanksgiving. , , , ,

sented to let the association have the
use of the Gaiety for Wednesday
night and a show will be given on

San Diego, Nov. 20. Newa of the
brutal murder of Mr. and Mr. G.
Burllnghame, an aged - American
couple, by a Mexican teamster, who
fled to the bills near Ensenada, with
their 16-year-old daughter after the
murder, was brought to San Diego
today by Captain Robert Isreal ot
the power schooner Nonsuch. The
bodies of the couple, their beads
smashed to pulp with boulders, have
been recovered about 100 yards apart
on the road leading from their raach
at San Ysldoro,' Mex., about 25 miles
from the coast. '
