Ia the royal manufactory of pottery at Meissen, Saxony, the work was for merly carried on with the utmost se crecy to preTent the processes from becoming known elsewhere. The es tablishment was a complete fortress, the portcullis of w hich was not raised day or night, no stranger being per mltted to enter for any purpose what eTer. Every workman, even the chief inspector, was sworn to silence. This Injunction wss formally repeated every month to the superior officers employ ed, while the workmen bad constantly before their eyes In large letters the warning motto. "Be Secret Cnto Death." It was well known that any person divulging the process would be Imprisoned for life in the castle of Koenigsteln. Even the king himself when he took strangers of distinction to visit the works was enjoined to se crecy. One of the foremen, however, escaped and assisted in establishing a manufactory in Vienna, from which the secrets spread all over Germany. Light and Sound and Glass. Why doesn't the closed window shut out light Just as much as it shuts out sound? Both light and Round travel through the air. and their waves come In contact with the glass. The light, after it has gone through tbe window, seems Just as strong or stronger, while the sound seems ever so much weaker. Why is it? Many of us have wonder ed. The reason is that light U not a wave of air, while sound Is. Light is a wave in the etber which Is in the glass as well as in the air. go that light in passing through glass still has Its i natural path of ether. But when sound waves strike the window glais they must put tbe glass into vibration, and i tbe glass In turn must make the air Inside vibrate. All this lessens the strength of tbe sound waves, and they reach our ears capable of producing a less startli.'is effect than are tbe light waves which reach our eye.
