Cknsurb wrong doing wherever
you see it, but don't gossip. Sense
less gossip, which to some is a tooth
some delicacy, has done more to
create misery than all other evil
tfVer in existence.
There is no doubt that the city
phouM have a plat ol the location
of hydraiits'so that each member
of the fire department could famil
iarize himself with their exact
whereabouts. It js said that ar
rangements will be made so that at
the time of alarm, notice can issue
as to what portion of the city is the
fire, in order that water may be
turned in the mains and ready
when the hose is connected.
It is the everlasting habit of
debt that makes times so hard all
over the United States. The spec
ulative spirit of the American peo
ple is almost universal, and so long
as they will borrow, juBt so long
will they be incident to all the
hardships imposed by capitalistic
power. No nation can be prosper
ous with such a curse clinging to
it, and the sooner people fret free of
debt, and stay that way, the soon
er will prosperity crown our shores.
Asd still the cry for free co'nage
of silver goes on. There i. of
course, a division on this question
in democratic 'auks, but all differ
ences will be settled before the Pres
idential campaign, and the settle
ment will be for further coinage of
the white metal. Even those who
are opposed to free coinage, can but
Bee that the nation is in need of a
greater volume of money, and they
will readily understand the import
of the increase being in silver.
The career of Olney, as Secretary
of State will be watched with inter
est. That he has a profou nd knowl
edge of law is too self evident a fact
to need . mention. Just how he
will administer the affairs of his
important trust remuins to be seen.
So far as is Vnown there is no rea
son why a successful lawyer cannot
be a huccessful diplomat and arbi
trator, and Cleveland's choice is
apparently a good one. Judge
Harmon, who succeeds Olney as
Attorney-General, is an able lawyer
and his is a prime appointment.
Some time back, 6ne Ezra Pop
pleton, who was an agent for a gold
washing machine, sued Chas. Nick
ell, the publisher of a southern
Oregon newspaper, for 110,000, be
cause its columns had denounced
him as a "bilk," and "confidence
man." Last week a federal jury
at Portland returned a verdict of
one dollar for the plaintiff, which
was equivalent to saying that the
editor should pay for the pleasure
of the arrest, only, and nothing for
the advertisement. Nickell is all
right and his newspaper friends on
ly wish that the tine had been
one dollar less.
To the average human mind it
almost seems that the Divine one
made a mistake in creating an af
finity between the consciousness of
the human life, and the clay which
1 . 1 .
envelops 11, oecaune tne one is so
subservient to the other. The in
tellectual, or as some would term it,
spiritual force of man is constantly
imposing edicts upon the dust,
which that element is ever tearing
down by its very coarseness. The
one sustains the other, and yet
there are those who will tell us of
free moral agency forgetful of the
fact that we are all fools, only that
some of us won't acknowledge it.
The administration seems to be
setting along very well, notwith
standing the effort of both popu
lists and republicans to throw dis
credit on every movemen t. Some
thing unexpected will drop on the
eve of the next campaign, as the
republicans think they Lave such
a walkover that they alr&vlv
beginning to fight over the Pree -tEtntial
nomination. '
and the prize ring has faded away
yet there are times when the man
with an extremely timid heart
wishes he had the science of Cor-
bett, and the etrikine powers of
John L.t together with the courage
of an Ethan Allen, just to glorious
ly punch some sinner's head. And
then he trembles at himself for be
ing brave enough to wish such a
thing.
Between the republican effort to
again get the reins of government,
and the calamitv-crvine of the
populists, the democrats have had
sufficient to contend with to bank
rupt almost any party, numerically
speaking. But these things are us
nothing when we come to think of
the recent great loss the organiza
tion has sustained. The defection
of the only R. H. Mitchell from the
patty to populism is a blow that
the Oregon democracy can illy
stand up against. But, neverthe
less, notwithstanding, a tlio ough
examination might show that his
political convictions are so "rotten"
that they are in conformity to his
newly found element. In truth he
has never been a democrat, or, po
litically t-peaking, anything else.
A STATEMENT
In last week's Independent there ar
peared an article, stating that a remon
strance had been circulated relative to
the planking now on the ground for re
pairing Main street of this city. We
consider the strictures unnecessary and
not pertinent, as the committee did not
expect to get lumber entirely free of sap,
and the lumber furnished is more than
an average lot of lumber. A number of
the largest taxpayers in the citv have ir
spected the planking and think it very
good considering the price paid. It
might be pertineut to here state that
the specifications did not call for lumber
free of sap. It appears that those mak
ing most complaint are two or ih e
who pay but very little, if anv, tax to
ward the support of the city. As to lay
ing the plank at an angle of 45 degrees,
at which the remonstrance takes issue,
it is a well known fact that in such a
position it will last much longer. Fur
thermore, the laying has been let cheaper
than ever before in Hillsboro's histo-.- -.
As there has been some talk in regard
to the bids we herewith submit them
