The fire bid fair at the start to be a very destructive one, and but for the water works and the untiring efforts of the firemen Hillsboro would now be iu ashes. Much credit is due the boys for their work. We are glad to know that there was a full turn out of the firemen. Also the memWs of the C jffee Club are deserving of special mention for their valuable assittance with warm stimulating coffee. and fresh sand wiches. Among the ladies present we noticed MesdameB. T.H. Tongue, Dr. Bailey, F. Kelsey, E Ci. Tate. H. Cave, John Morgan, J. Lamkin, Pittinger and Miss. Rose Wilcox. Mrs. Northrup of the Hillsboro House also assisted the Coffee Club by beating water for them on the hotel range. Hillsboro is fortunate in hav ing one of the best systems of water works on the Pacific Coast. Its ef ficiency was thoroughly demonstra ted in the supply and force at the fire Wednesday morning. From 12 : 10 until almost 2 o'clock four constant streaniR of water were kept playing on the buildings and the tire was under control in three minutes after the steam started. The fire was very obstinate from the fact that it was confined to the walls and ceilings of the .buildings. An amount of water sufficient to float the .building was thrown on it, and the streams were full from three inch hose with inch ami a quarter nozzles. Four hours after the fire whs extinguished water was from three inches to a foot deep all around the building and E. J. Ly ons' largo cellar was filled almost I full. When the water was shut off there was yet on hands a tank full and an inexhuuslable well full. The steady pumping did not lower the water in the well in the least. The water works have saved Hills boro .$100,000 worth of proprty twice. No more kicking about water works. Frank Fletcher, who was rhot in the leg some time ago, through an accident, is again able to be around. Mr. and Mrs. James Churchill have commenced housekeeping on the Hobble place. When ho reached the McEldovvney hill, north-east of town, he dismounted and pushed his wheel up the hill. Just as he reached the top of the hill four mn stepped out of the brush and intercepted his progress. They blindfolded him and tied hit hands behind his back, and marched him back to the Boscow corner. Here they procured from him the keys and combination to the First National Bank. Two of their ' number came on to town while the o'her two remained with the banker. The wind was a little chilly, and when Mr. Shute com plained of being cold his guards took off their coats and wrapped him up. At about three or four o'clock in the morning they gave up the attempt to rob the bank as the time lo:ik baffled all their efforts to get into the vault.
