All Oregon seems to have been
. aroused and enthused over the new
home of the Portland Commercial
Club. At one luncheon last week
there were representatives from fif
teen different towns and cities of
the state. The convention hall on
the sixth floor, in which all Ore

come, is a central feature. Every
picture hung upon its walls is an
Oregon scene, and in this room dur

When they rere confronted with
the fact that Kates and communi
ties which adopted prohibition grew
poor and lean, they said it was not
so. When tbey were shown that
the United States census proved
that only three states in the union
had ever decreased in population,
and that two of them were prohi
bition states, they said "Do not
worry. This a only a local option
law. We art not in favor of pro
hibition." When this same crowd of salar
ied agitators vas asked if taxes
were not generally higher in prohi
bition communities than in com
munities which handled the busi
ness under the license system, they
were quick to answer. "It is not
so, but even if it were, it does not
matter, for thii Js local option, uot
prohibition."
And now the cat is out of the
bag. They ar( not local optionists.
They are prohibitionists after all.
The opponent of the local option
law were right, It really was pro
hibition in disguise. And the
scheme of the imart attorneys, lec
turers and orators who make a fat
living out of the prohibition agita
tion, is quite pUin. The scheme is
to start in quietly; to hold elections
in precincts in which there are no
saloons, never were any saloons,
and probably Bever would be any
saloons. Such orecincts being
