Also It la a punishable offense to de

it into circulation again.
Any private Individual who auda
ciously hoisted the royal standard over
his dwelling would get Into serious
trouble. lie would lie peremptorily or
dered to take It down nnd abjectly apol
ogize, and If he escaped a heavy tint)
would have to thank his majesty' for
bearance for his good luck. The royal
standard Is the emblem of the King's
regal nuthority, to be displayed only
where he is personally present, and for
subject to hoist It la nominally equiv
alent to high treason. The union Jack,
as the flag of the nation, la a different
thing altogether, aud can be displayed
by anybody. '
It Is popularly supiMised that In this
country man can get up and say
whatever he likes about the sovereign
with Impunity. This la true only with
in strictly defined limits. A Socialist
orator can publicly denounce the theo

aud announce a decided preference for
republic, and nobody can touch hi in.
Put If he once began to speak In
sultingly or slightingly of the King per

or at least effectually suppressed by
the nearest isilli-enuin.
To strike the King would, nceordlng
to the strict letter of the law, render
the assailant liable to the death penalty
no matter how trilling the blow was in
reality.
Lieut. Ple, who Is usually reckoned
among those who attempted the life of
the late Queen Victoria, could not have
actually contemplated murder. He
bad no lethal weapon In his istssesslon
at the time of the outrage, but he
truck her majesty across the fu with
his walking stick. This wa sulllclent
to bring him within the shadow of the
scaffold. Ho was coiiih.nned to death
and would have been hanged bad tils
sentence not been commuted.
Apart from direct methods of con

can be guilty of the offense in a more
roundabout way.
It is lese inajeste to bring the King's

theatrical companies who have appear

pleasantly reminded of this fact. Care

During the past year numerous in
quiries have come to the Slate college
department ol horticulture asking ques
tions which generally can lie summed
op in the one question: "What kinds
of fruit will do beet where I live?"
This class of qniries has given the atad
ol the state experiment station consid
erable trouble, since, as tUted by Pro
fessor Thornber, head of the department
of horticulture, unlesa the staff mem
bers know eiactly the climatic and roll
conditions of the region from which the
question came, erroneous information
may be given, leading the seeker for in
formation to plant trees not at all
adapted to his region.
"Now we have rolved the problem,"
said Professor Thorher, recently. "Dur
ing the lat year we have made a oars
ful survey of the state with reference to
the particular varieties of fruits which
are adapted to each region. We have
claeeinrd the lists into 'Western Wash

Valleys.' In thia list ia included ap
ples, pears, cherries, peachca, aprioota,
plums, raspberries, prunes, blackber
ries, goceenerrles. currants, strawber
ries and nuts. Early, medium early
and late varieties are given where it is
necessary. We submit these lists to all
inquirer" now, and from a doien or so
gcod varetiea of applet, pears, etc., tie
may choose as he likes, according to the
adaptability of the fruit for his region.
"Another experiment we have in
hand is one in which we have selected

the eight hundred or so varieties In (he

of mankind; when from any cause it becomes infected with impurities,
h n mors or poisons, disease in some form is sure to follow. Muddy, sallow
