dier's home last Tuesday. He
leaves a wife and son in this

thing is now in readiness for the
Big Horse Show in this city next
week Saturday. Mr. Cave, as
secretary of the Northwest Stal
lion Association, has been work
ing for weeks to get all the horse
men in this section, and all over
the state for that matter, inter
ested in this event and he in
forms us that the entries now

held at the court house at 8
o'clock in the evening, and it is

this meeting, and show by your
attendance, at least, that you
are in favor of making a prettier

last Monday night and the Polk
County Observer says: "The
Hillsboro Independent says Mr.
Jennings is an eloquent and con

of Sherwood. The marriage will
take place at the home of the

people are popular in the com
munity in which they live.
The Oregon State Sunday
School convention will be held at
Forest Grove, in the Congrega
tional church, April 27, 28 and
29. Marion Lawrence, the great
est Sunday school worker in the
world: Prof. E. 0. Excell, of
Chicago, and Rev. W. C. Merritt
international field worker, will be
among the large number present.
Everybody is cordially invited to
attend.
L. E. Wilkes leaves early next
week for Montana where he will
again take up survey work for
the government. 1 here is prob
ably no man in Montana better
posted in survey work in that
state than Mr. Wilkes, and the
government considers his work
of such importance that he has
been requested to write a series
of papers on the subject for use
in Washington.
Electric licht meters are being
put in by the city authorities all
over town. When tne jod is
completed the lighting rate will
be advanced, but this will not

not use any more than you need,
which will be better lor the city,
and economy can be practiced by
those wishing to be economical.
Samuel Ackley, an old pioneer
of Lewis county, Washington,
died at his home, three miles east
of Winlock, Monday morning
last He was born in Genesee
county, N. Y., May 10, 1827, and
was married to Miss Almira M.
Clark, at Chelsea, Mich., April
30, 185G. With his wife he mov
ed to this city in 1871, and from
here to Winlock in 1881. I le was
the father of 13 children, nine of
whom are living: Mrs. Carrie
McLeod, of Chehalis; Mrs. Clara
Freeman, North Yakima. Wash. ;
M. D. Ackley, San Quentin, Cal. ;
Miss Jennie and Messrs. John,
George and Byron Ackley, and
Mrs. Willis Champ, of Winlock;
and Rodney Ackley, of Mabton,
