D. W. BATH. Editor aid Proprietor.
APRIL 10, 1008.
To the Voters.
I hereby state to the people of
Oregon that 1 believe in tne prin
ciples of the Republican party as
rvpre?o"cd by t? earless lead
er ancTadvoca'te of the rights of
thf h-.:isk'K. Theodore lioosevelt.
I have confidence in the ability
and integrity of the voters, and
feel that the interest of the peo
rl.and business of the state is
safe in their hands.
I consider the office of United
States Senator is a political one
anil believe in electing to that
high jmsition a man who will
carry out the principles of the
President and his party and if I
am elected to the Oregon State
S n:ite I will vote for the man
for United States Senator who
has received the endorsement of
mv nartv as expressed at the
1 " ' E. W. HAINES,
Candidate for State Senate,
Oak Nolan.
Attorney Nolan, of Tillamook,
candidate for the nomination of
joint senator for the district com
posed of Washington, Yamhill,
Lincoln and Tillamook counties,
believes that the people should
have the privilege of election
their own United States senator
and conies out squarely for State
ment No. 1. Mr. Nolan is a
lavvver of ability, a straight re
publican, and will receive a large
vote in Tillamook county.
C. C. Hammerly.
Last Sunday's Oregonian stat
ed that C. C. Hammerly. candi
date for joint senator from the
district composed of Washington,
Lincoln, Tillamook and Yamhill
counties, was unpledged. This
is an error, as the petition circa
la ted in "his behalf in this county
pledged him absolutely to repub
lican choice; in fact, the same
position taken by Mr. Barrett
The Oregonian has since correct
ed the error.
Mr. Hammerly was born and
raised in Iowa, but has lived in
the west for more than a dozen
years. For a number of years
he taught school in country, high
school and academy, but for the
past eight or ten years has been
newspaper publisher and editor.
Those who know him best have
not the least doubt but that, if
elected, he will fairly and well
represent every part of the dis
trict, and that no mistake will be
made in supporting him.
VV. N. Barrett.
W. N. Barrett, of this county.
is a candidate on the Republican
primary ticket for joint senator
of the senatorial district compris
ing Lincoln, Tillamook, Washing
ton and Yamhill counties. Tilla
mook and Yamhill counties each
have a candidate, yet Mr. Barrett
is receiving letters from promi
nent citizens in those counties
pledging him their support, and
if his native county of Washing
ton gives him loyal support there
will be no question about his
nomination. He is a lifelong Re
publican, and has canvassed this
county in a number of campaigns,
v hen a member of the legisla
ture he has always opposed ex
travagant appropriations, and, if
nominated and elected, is fitted
and qualified to efficiently repre
sent the interests of all the peo
ple oi the district, lie has al
ways, when a candidate, received
good support here, and as he is
t he only candidate for this position
in uus county, will no aoubt re
ceive practically the unanimous
support of the Republican voters
of this county at the coming pri
mary election.
Hock Roads and risher.
Spend your money on dirt and
you get mud holes. Sjiend your
money on rock and you get good
roads.
Rock roads are the only roads
for Washington county, and now
is the time to commence.
Fisher's Rock Road Bill will
bring them.
There has been more rock
road built in Beaverton during
the past two years than all the
rest put together.
Why not help the farmers of
Washington countv.
KARL K. FISHER.
Candidate for State Senator.

A correspondent from Corne

port of the election there Mon

sonic old siks who had been

Cake or FultonWhich I
It will be well for republicans
to study, carefully and well, the
the peculiar situation now con
fronting them in the selection of
a fnnHiriite for United Suites
t
senator at the coming primary,
Tip candidacy of Gov. Chamber
lain on the Cake platform
now romnlications to the
adds
situa
tion. If the three were
for the June election
to race
it would
strength
certainly add material
tn Mr- Fulton, as both Mr. oaKe
and Mr. Chamberlain are commit
ted to Statement JNo. i. or mc
election of a senator iy aireci
vote of the people, wnne ;ur.
Fulton is on record as opposing
it. But at the April primary,
either Mr. Fulton or Mr. Cake
must step aside. We have stud
ied the situation very carefully
ant liruw 1.1 tu luiiuwuiji Ci..u-
fions: .
First Should Mr. Cake re
ceive the republican nomination
it will place Mr. Chamberlain
between the devil and the deep
sea, witnoui a piauorm iobluuu
on, he having voluntarily assum
ed a non-partisan, happy-go-
luck v gait, going the whole hog on
Statement No. 1 and telling his
democratic brethren he recently
loved so well that he has become
infatuated with most ot the
Roosevelt politics"-until after
the June election-after which
time the probationary state will
cease and be airain permitted to
exercise his conscience by voting
for democratic measures in the
senate, if elected.
Second. That as Mr. Cake
has firmly stood for, and man
fully defended Statement No. 1
for the past two years, there
would be no just cause for repub
licans to prefer a new convert
from the democratic ranks on
this question to the exclusion of
all other questions of vital im
portance to the state and nation
which will come up during the
senatorial term.
Third. That in the light of
past history, with legislative
holdups, corrupt use of money to
influence senators and repre
sentatives, men seeking election
to the legislature on senatorial
years to see the fun; special
trains running, with all other cor
rupting influences in connection
therewith, thus bringing shame
and disgrace on the fair name of
our state, our people will never
again return to the old system of
election by the legislature.
Fourth. I hat a very large ma
jority of the tte-wnpapers in the
state are first last and all the
time in favor of the people elect
ing1 a senator.
Fifth. That nearly every
grange in the state has declared
by resolution, that they will not
support candidates for the legis
lature who are opposed to elec
tion by the people.
Sixth. That it is a republican
measure passed by a republican
legislature.
Seventh. Nearly every candi
date that has announced for the
legislature has subscribed to
Statement No. 1, at least m modi
fied form, and those who failed
had to come back and take their
medicine.
Eighth. With 30,000 republi
can majority behind Mr. Cake,
would it be possible for Mr.
Chamberlain to jump sideways
into the United States senate by
using a little soft soap on weak
kneed republicans? We think
not.
Ninth. Should Mr. Fulton be
nominated, the conditions would
be entirely reversed, thus placing
Fulton on the defensive instead
of Chamberlain which would at
least greatly reduce the repub
lican majority
In view of these facts as we
see them, we must say that to
our mind, the safest, surest and
best thing for republicans to do
is to vote for Mr. Cake for Unit
ed States senator. Corvallis
