C. W. im Editor and Proprietor.
Hon. W. N. Parrett this week
filed his petition for the nomina
tion of joint senator.
On Wednesday E. VV. IIaine3
r.f v.r. ;r Crr.vG rikiiasuit in the
i in. ail court against Frank 1.
Kane, ctal, thawing him with
tin misappropriation of funusap
r ximatinj; 25,tHM). and mani
pulation of books of the plaintiff s
bank. Mr. Kane denies the
charv.es and says he will fight
the ease to a finish.
II. II. Greer has filed notice
that he is out for the nomina
tion of representative and has
chosen for his declaration that if
elected he will "work for the in
terest of the ieople of the coun
ty, will opixi.se all extravagant
legislation and will support the
republican thoice for United
States .senator." He desires
printed alter his name on the
ballot the words: "Will favor
an economical administration of
public all'airs." If nominated
ami elected. Mr. Creer can be
relied on as doing as he has
promised. He started in as a
poor boy and by strict attention
to business has established a good
t r:nli Mill I considerable property,
He has been four times elected
as school director and has filled
all ollices of trust satisfactorily.
Hon. II. M. Cake delivered an
able address at the court house
last Wednesday evening and for
an hour held the attention ot those
present closely. He gave in a
clean-cut manner his reasons for
standintr bv Statement No. 1,
and said that he believed a large
maioritv of the people are with
him. He declared that he be
lieves that a United States sena
tor should be elected by the peo
ple and not by the legislature, as
has been the custom. That he is
willing to stand by their choice,
and if elected he will serve them
faithfully and to the best of his
ability. We believed in Mr. Cake
when he was before the people
two years ago, at which time
Washington county rolled him up
a splendid majority, and we be
lieve in him now, and we think
the result at the primary election
in April in this county will be
favorable to his nomination. He
is a man fully able to assume the
duties of United States senator,
and if sent to Washington he
promises to do all in his power to
advance .the best interests of
Oregon nnd the people he will
represent.
Smith Throws a Fit.
Two weeks ago The Independ
ent said a good word for a good
oflicial and our worthy friend W.
I). Smith falls into a fit, gets the
' aid of one of our city attorneys,
and together they produce a let
ter perfectly devoid of good horse
sense, and had it published in the
Argus last week, making the
communication a personal attack
onus. Just why Mr. Smith is
grieved, he does not say, or what
business it is of his that this pa
per should speak in good terms
of an ellicient oflicial, is some
thing he does not explain.
He admits every statement
made in the article referred to
until he reaches that part where
a woman deputy is mentioned,
then he gets white in the face,
has an aw tul cramp, and rushes
into print. Ho savs that Mr.
Goodin was the best county clerk
Washington county ever knew,
nut I ailed to mention that Mr,
Goodin married the lady who hat
l Ken his assistant in the office
lor more than a year.
He also refers to J. A. Imbrie,
and intimates that he was just a
trille better than Mr. Goodin, but
here again he fails to mention
that 1 'tli Mr. Imbrie's wife ami
daughter assisted him in the of
fice, and we will venture the as
sertion that the work performed
by all the ladies mentioned was
perfectly satisfactory. At least
they have escaped the criticism
that has been handed out in
large chunks to some others.
After consigning the women
to outer darkness and forbidding
them the privilege of earning an
honest living in any county of
fice, he goes after the third
termers. lie believes no man is entitled
to a third term, but has not a
word to say about Treasurer
Jackson, who is a third termer,
and the people seem to want him
again. Neither does he mention
Assessor Wilcox, w ho has grown
gray in the assessor's office.
Still we must admit that there is
a growing opinion going over
the county that he is overdoing
the "third-term" act and should
make mm for a newer man.
Twelve or fourteen years in one
olliee ought to satisfy any man,
but if the voters of Washington
county want him, or any other
man, it is their privilege to vote
him in. So, Friend Smith, keep
right on running, ami if you are
wanted the voters will tell youi
all about it, and if elected, they
will only demand that you con
duct their aiiiairs intelligently and
as good as your predecessor.
And you have our jxrmission to
choose whoever you wish as a
deputy -a woman if you wish.

Few melodramas of the last
three seasons have had so great
a measure oi success as ino
Mother to Guide Her" which will
be seen at the Crescent Theatre
on Monday, March ICth. The
work possesses many lasting
qualities which guarantee it life
for many years. Miss Jeanette
Carew, who heads the cast, made
a very close study of "Bunco"
and for six months before the
production of the play, went to
New York and lived in the
slums, there studying the life,
habits, manners, characteristics,
and slang of its habitues, and
visited all the scenes introduced
in the play. Great care was tak
en in giving the play the neces
sary atmosphere, and the pro
duction is a complete one. Therje
is considerable of the comedy
element all the way through the
piece and it also abounds with
numerous specialties.
