D. W. BATH. Editor an. Proprietor.
II. G. Kins, of Dairy precinct,
announces this week that he is a
candidate for the republican nom
ination for county treasurer. He
has been a resident of Forest
Grove for four years and was
city recorder for one term. He
is at p. esent state counsel for
M. V. A. His card appears
the "candidates' column."
Hon. W. K. Newell on Wednes
day filed his petition for renom
i nation as Representative, and
promises if elected to vote for
the republican receiving the
highest number of votes for sen
ator. This is a clean-cut, plain
statement, and if the voters can
not elect him on that platform he
can stav at home. He does not
want to go to Salem and be fore
ed to vote for a democrat and
will not do it. iMr. Newell made
a good record last winter, is hon
est and sincere in all his actions,
does not straddle the fence, and
the people always know where to
find him. He is a good man to
tie to and there is no doubt of
his re-election.
L-ist Saturday was Washing
t n's birthday, and the people of
Ilillslioro ouirht to feel proud of
the way they reverenced the
m.'inory of the "Father of His
Country." Not a flag was dis
played in this city, either from
t ie court house or school build
iig. and no one seemed to have
h id the time or inclination to
even think of the immortal
George and the famous cherry
tree. Corning out from Portland
on Hie early morning tram we
noted that every school house
passed on the way floated the
stars and stripes, while in Fort
land flags were floating from
every staff. All honor to the
little school houses all over this
country and the scholars and
teac hers in them, for they have
the true patriotic spirit and send
Old Glory to the breeze on every
possible occasion.
In the "Candidates' Column'
Geo. G. Hancock of Forest Grove
announces that he is out for the
republican nomination for county
sheriff. Many hands seems to be
reaching out for that particular
office, and The Independent has
only the best wishes to express
for each one seeking the nomina
tion. They are all friends of
ours, each one competent to fill
the important position, and the
voters will make no mistake, no
matter which one is selected.
Mr. Hancock, while not so well
known in the eastern part of the
county, has a large acquaintance
elsewhere, and his coming out
for the nomination is particularly
gratifying to them, for they de
clare "In- is just the man for the
place. lie says "if nominated
and elected he will during his
term of ollice faithfully and im
partially discharge the duties
thereof. Mid jrjye to the people
ol this county an efficient and at
the same time an economical ad
ministration. He further st.ites
that he will give the business of
that ollice his personal attention,
and every man a square deal."
It is known in every state and
country that no position in the
gift of a county is more impor
tant than that of county clerk.
Its business not only does with
people who have passed away,
and to those now living, but
to the future generations. It is
important that this work be per
formed carefully and right, for
an error in certain records,
though apparently slight, might
C.iuse endless trouble and litiga
tion in years to come. And for
this reason, and there are others,
this important office should be
held by a competent man. We
believe that K. J. Godman. the
present county clerk, has demon
strated his ability for the posi
tion, and he is again before the
voters of this county for renom
ination and election. When
praise for work performed comes
from judges and attorneys, both
at home and abroad, it certainly
means something, and it is said
of Mr. Godman that he can pro
duce any paper filed in the vaults
of that office at almost a mo
ment's notice. He has a system
of doing his work that other
county clerks have commended
and are ittr-ming after, which
fct tAinly speaks well for him. It
is true that Mr. Godman has for
his deputy a woman, his own
daughter, which in the eyes of a
few is a downright crime. UerK
Fields of Multnomah county must
be awful wicked, for he has a
A,an vL-nmpn working in his of-
Mr. Godman needed help,
and he wanted some one in whom
he could confide and depend on.
So Miss Godman went to Fort
land and took a thorough course
in the Armstrong Business Col-
the
in
Ipo-e. She studied hard, passea
a first class examination and was
nnnnintpd deDutv to her father,
a position she has held with credit
to herself, the entire satisiacuon
of the large number who nave
transacted business in thatomce,

father. The taxpayers pay the
clerk to do the work of the clerk s
office and do it well, but nothing
ia written in the bond that the
J
deputy must wear pants, so Mr.
Godman employed what he con
sidered the best help for him
self, and there is no complaint ex
cept by a very few who claim the
deputy should be a man. Air.
V. D. Smith, for two years dep
uty under Mr. Godman, is out
for the nomination for county
clerk, and others may take the,
field. It will then be up to the
voters. If Mr. Godman is re
elected the clerk's office will re
ceive the same careful attention
he has given it in the past If
another man is chosen, he wil
bow his thanks to the people he
has served, and work for the elec
tion of their choice next June,
