Editor Indeiendent: We read
and talk about the prosperity of
this xrvvt and plorious country,
and go . n talking and boasting
of our -cat resources, while in
the sam i papers we read of thou
sands out of employment starving-thousands
of men tramping
from place to place in search of
work. We read of 10, WW out of
work at Seattle, and in that city
JX:J ix-nnilesamen packed togeth
er to sleep in the gaol, and some
fainting from the stench and foul
air of so manv together. We
read of 150, (MM) out of employ
ment in Chicago. We read of
the jxKir sick eople of Los An
geles suffering, and many turned
away from the hospital doors for
want of room. We read of vice

nearly every week all this time. As
to what action I ahall take in re
gard to his rtrictures, I cannot at
this time say. The insinuation
both absurd and preposterous.
"I looked in upon the meeting ai
Forest Grove more as a spectator
than anvthine else. It was a mass
meeting, and had it been a meeting
tate, and murderers set free
our so-called courts 01 justice,
because money is king. We read
of marriages in high life, where
millions are spent in dress and
wedding feasts, in the purchase
of titled nobility of foreign coun
tries, and in the same hour and
on the same street we read of
Door woman triving birth to
child, in the street, in weather
decrees below zero, and yet
we go on talking and boasting
and writing about this glorious
nrosnerous America. We reac
of diseases and deaths, and can
we wonder at it, when people
are packed together like sheep
in iraol: halt starved men, and
inhaling each others fetid breath.
(lod! It is sickening to read of
it. And in the same cities where
all this fearful poverty is ram
pant, are the robber millionaires
that by the aid of our so-called
laws and our great and glorious
government, and of men that we
by our ignorant votes, have plac
ed in power to aid these com
bines and trust companies and
stock gambling schemers and
railroad combines to control
their country and bring about
such wretchedness, and by get
ting hold of the land from the
people. Still we go on in the
same way, moving in the same
groove, bending our necks for
the collar of serfdom, as in the
days of old, when men wore iron
collars, w elded round their necks
in token of submission to their
masters. And w hen any idea of
reform is siioken of, it is scouted
as another scheme at work for
some other scheming act of mon
ey sharks and the surplus mon
ies of the states and government
is swallowed up in pensioning
well-to-do people, or some other
such fraud, instead of being used
lor the cmploymentof the needy.
We need good roads, we need
more railroads, we need water
ways and a thousand and one im
provements that would give em
ployment to the great army of
unemployed and poor of this
great- America. Instead of the
land being swallowed up by these
land sharks it should have been
used and should now be used for
the benefit of these homeless
people and their families. Men
might be employed on the Tana-
ma canal. 1 hey might be helped
to Alaska under land inducement
to develop her resources. The
government might open up mines
lor the employment ot men
1 hey might be employed in the
place t these Orientals. If th
Philippine Islands are of any ac
count, they might be helpec
there to develop that country.
One could go on enumerating the
needs oi America, lhe wealth
of the cities could still find em
ployment in improvements. The
go eminent could own the rail
roads and develop its immense
trai ts ol country for the jieopl
and iiy the people, who go to
make up this vast nation. No
need of thousands of penniless
and homeless families and in
country that has been boasting
of its great prosperity for the
past year.
Where is the surplus that is
our boast, that it is not feeding
tne nungry ot this America? No,
the immense prosperity so much
written about, is the fraudulent
wealth of the millionaires at the
expense of the bone and sinew
of the nation. The banking
schemes that defraud the work
ing man of his hard-earned mon
ey, w hich means the welfare of
his family and home. It is time
the people awoke out of the mes
meric sleep that has been cast
over them by the jiowers of ill
gotten wealth, and a halt called
by the (ower of intelligent vot
ing, regardless of iolitical par
ties. Albert O. Yates.

Effect of Drugs In Food.
The results of exhaustive ex
periments conducted by the Bur
eau of Chemistry of the Depart
ment of Agriculture to determine
the poisonous effect of such
drugs as borax, benzoic acid,
benzoate of soda, sulphate of
copper, sulphur dioxide, formal
dehyde and salicylic acid when
used as preservatives in food
stuffs have been outlined before
the house committee on agricul
ture by Dr. W. II. Wiley, chief
of the bureau. The main con
elusion is that the expulsion of
these and kindred drugs from
the body shortens the term of
the average man's life in the
United States, and that kidney
uisease, so prevalent among
Americans, is largely the result
of constant introduction into the
system of such substances. Dr
Wiley told the committee he had
discovered that salt solution was
a perfect substitute for sulphur
in the whitening and drying of
truit, and he exhibited samples
of apples so dried to prove his
statement.

The decision in the Putnam case
is the cause of some warm discus
sion among the memlers of the
press in Southern Oregon. The
Jacksonville Post assumes the re
sponsibility of proving that Judge
Hauna's decision is right, that Tut
nam himself is a liar, and "the
small fry papers from Baker City

possible that the supreme court de

Brother Overholt to change hi

his brethren of the press will take
his mild insinuation that he is the
