IS T. KANE REPLIES.
Denies lhat He Ever Took a Cent
Belonging lo F. W. Haines or
Even Kite wl m SaWa taiga-.
HilLsboro, Ore., Feb. 12th 1908.
To the Editor:-Inasmuch as
Mr. E. V. Haines has by insinu
ations and innuendoes attempted
to charge me with beinjr respon
sible for a shortage of twenty
thousand dollars at his bank, in
the year 11HJ3, and while I do not
consider it necessary to deny the
charge made in the manner and
form this charge was made, yet
I desire to say, for the benefit of
my friends, that if there was any
shortage in the funds of E. V
I Tames, hanker, at any time dur
ing my incumbency as cashier o
that institution, I never knew
anything about it and I never re
ceived one cent belonging to the
E. W. Haines bank that was not
justly due me, or received in
legitimate business transaction
and I hud no knowledge of any
shortage in any amount until the
statement made by Mr. Haines,
I have resided in Washington
county all of my life; have resid
ed within six miles of the resi
dence of Mr. JIaines ever since
he claims to hav e discovered the
shortage. He has never in any
manner intimated that there was
any shortage and the statement
he makes is preposterous upon
its face, when you consider the
fact that the inoculation of twenty
thousand dollars of his funds
practicallv meant the wiping out
of the bulk of his iersonal for
tune. Any statements, insinua
tions or innuendoes to the effect
that I was discharged or that I
removed any funds or had any
knowledge of the removal of any
funds are absolutely false and
untrue. I resigned as cashier of
the E. W. Haines bank to attend
to my own private business.
It is true I did borrow ten
thousand dollars from Mr. Haines,
the greater ixrtion of which has
been repaid, but that transaction
between myself rind Mr. Haines
was one of borrower and lender
only.
To those who know me the
manner of making the charge
and the form of the charge abso
lutely needs no answer, as it is
apparent that it is an attempt on
the part of Mr. Haines to excuse
his own actions and the failure
of his institution.
Truly yours,
F. T. Kane.
The following is taken from
the St. Paul, Minn., News, and
if lived ii) to by every voter,
would make the life of our pub
lic servants happy and far more
useful: I'.uy a dollar's worth of
stamps, or less if you cannot af
ford that much, and a correspon
ding number of envelops, and
stick the stamps on the envel
opes. Then when any matter
of public interest comes up in
congress, on which you have a
decided opinion and in which you
take an interest, write a brief
letter about it to your represen
tative in congress and to each
senator from your state, telling
them what you think ought to be
done. Don't make a longlabor
ed argument; write briefly and
to the iH.int. and if you can do
so truth fully say that your neigh
bors agree with you and are
watching the matter. If a great
many people would do this, mem
bers of congress would pay more
attention to the people's needs
and demands, even though they
should disagree to some extent,
as of cours they would. Unless
a congressman hears directly
from the people he may say that
he doesn't know what they want
or think, or that they don't care.
Write to him. then, about every
thing of real interest and impor
tance oK-n rivers, railroad reg
ulation, parcels post, and so on.
The trusts and railroads and oth
er great interest don't fail to
npjval to and influence congress
men. They do so constantly, in
various ways, and so much that
many congressmen
apparently
forget the masses of the people
except on elect ion day
