The Hop Market.
The Oregonian of yesterday
says:
J. J. Metzler returned from
New York yesterday with a poor
opinion of the future of the hop
market. He says it is practical
ly impossible to sed hops there,
as the brewers are fully supplied
and some of them are trying to
sell hops out of then- own ware
houses. They are badly scared
bv the spread of the prohibition
sentiment, Mr. Metzler said, and
thev cannot be induced to make
new committment-;. He found
choice Oregon hops of the 1906
cron offered to brewers as low as
3 cents delivered.
Advices were received yester
day by a local doaNr from a New
York buyer to the e:Iect that he
had bought 1"0 bales of choice
Oreron 1807s at l-2c. This lot
was sold by Alien & Co., a New
York fruit and commission firm
which early in the season solicit
ed consignments in the Newberg
and other seeticr.s. With the
freight and all cf,"imissions de
ducted this will ret the grower
about .V. At the tme the hnps
were shipped from Oregon, the
local market was around 8c.
Trading lias subsided material
ly in this state since ast week
and the dealers pronounce the
tone of the market easier. Most
of the buyers have withdrawn
from the market temporarily
at least. Purchases made by
Hart & Hubbard this week ag

The entire force of mail car
riers of the United States are re
joicing over u circular just issued
by the Fourth Assistant P.wt
master Genera! in regard to pat
rons placing -,,ins in their mail
boxes to pay the postage on their
letters. This order is particularly
acceptable to the carriers, coming
as it does right in the winter
time. I'.elow is a copy of the
item which the postmasters are
supsed to give as much public
ity to as jvissible:
The iH)stmaster general desires
to call attention to the practice
of some patrons of rural delivery
of placing l.mse coins in their
ooxes each time they desire to
dispatch letters instead of sup-'
plying themselves with iKstage
Inis practice imposes undue1
hardship on rural carriers in re-1
moving loose coins from llxes
and delays them on the service'
oHheir routes. ;
The jxistmaster general, there-'
fore, urgently request that pat
rons provide themselves and
keep on hand a supply of stamps '
consistent with and in demand ef i
their needs. It is a so verv de
sirable that patrons place in their
mail boxes sma 1 dotachnh enns
of wood or tin in which to place
eoins, when necessary, in pur
chasing supplies of stamps.

B. W. B. Kisby. generally
known as "Doc" Kisby, is now
an actor with the Allen Stock
company at the Lyric theatre,
Portland. Those who have seen
him say that he makes a good
actor. He used to be a Tigard
ville sport, but it seems that
things didn't hum to suit him, so
he hiked off for the great metro
polis, where he has since had a
most brilliant career.
II. B. Tigard had the misfor
tune to have his foot cut across
the ankle last week while assist
ing N. Holm to take out a stump
on the Bunnell farm. It seems
that II. B. had taken hold of the
stump and was nulling it over
sideways so that Mr. Holm could
cut the tap root and finding his
position inconvenient, started to
shift his foot to a more comfort
able position, and got his foot in
the way of a falling axe, which
struck him across the front of
his ankle and severed the cords
cutting a gash about an inch and
a half deep and chipped out a
niw of bone. It is said his foot
is crippled for life, but we hope
for the best.
