The Board of Aldermen of New
York city passed au ordinance for
bidding women to smoke in public
place, and the mayor promptly ve
toed the measure, declaring that
the aldermen had no power to make
such a law. That's right; now
ladies fire up the corncob whenever
vou fi't-1 like it.
The Iv. V. Haines private bank
at l'oitt Grove closed its doors last
Saturday and the reason given is
its inability to realize on securities,
No statement is given out, but it is
stated that large deposits have been
withdrawn from the bank within
the past few months, though it is
believed that all claims can be paid
if time is given to realize on as
sets Mr. llaiues is to call a meet

let them take such action as they
think best.
W. J. Bryan thinks Roosevelt's
policies are all right and in a re
cent speech at Dover, Del., said:
"Roosevelt has rendered a service
to his country that no republican
appreciates as I do. His service to
his party is of incalculable good for
he has played the part of an honest
reformer and the reformer is the
salt that seasons and saves his
party." Takting thisintoconsider
tiou, coming from so reliable a
source, why not keep Mr. Roose
velt in the Wbite.I louse four years
more ? '
The new postal law will not take
twenty-five names from our list, for
the reason that most of our sub
scrilers have not only ordered the
paier but are paying for it prompt-,
ly. We had no hand in making
the new postal ruling, but propose
to o!ey the law to the letter! If
you are liehind on you subscription
you are rcsiwitfully asked to call
and settle, as we cannot afford to
put a one-cent stamp on the paper
each week, and we must either do
this or discontinue sending it. We
do not want to lose a name, and we
hope you will see the necessity of
attending to this matter right away.
The Independent has received
from lion. C. W. Fulton a mail
sac k of garden and field seeds which
are at the disposal of anyone wish
ing them. They are not warranted
to giow, but they help to swell the
tonnage in the contracts for carry
ing the mails, and along with the
thousands of tons of "public docu
ments," of no earthly use to any
one, sent out from Washington ev
ety week, adds just that much more
to the impossibility of ever getting
the Uniud States mail service on
a paing basis. However, the
seeds ate yours; come and

Roller skating has become quite
a fashionable fad here lately, the
public hall has been transformed
into a skating rink and several
nights In the week large crowds
throng the premises.
I,ost, strayed or stolen. A black
smith of this place went to the city
some three weeks ago and since
that tins? nothing has been learned
of his whereabouts. Could he have
been "shanghied?" Echo answers,
nevermore.
Bud Knudson,1 from Beef Bend,
ruffled the peace and dignity of this
city recently by assaulting Jack
Hess, and in the recorder's court
pleaded guilty and deposited an
eagle as a recompense before de-
pating. Now u appears mar, a
double eagle was extracted from
him in Hillsboro last week for the
same offense. Bud's pugilistic ex
perience seems to be costing him an
unusual amount of good money just
at present.
The Bricley family, managing
the boarding house at the Middle-
ton sawmill, appear to be extreme
ly unfortunate of late. The moth
er died a tew weeks ago quite sud
denly and now it is reported that a
married daughter is critically ill
with pneumonia. In fact, life is
despaired of.
A Japanese employee of the
Southern Pacific repair train while
at work loading ties here last week
had a finger bone fractured acci
dentally, in consequence of his
carelessness in handling the tim
bers. Joseph Simon after recovering
from a severe attack of pneumonia,
is afflicted with lumbago. His lit
tle daughter died lrom the effects
of the former disease about two
weeks ago.

Numerous sales of real estate,
principally tarras, have been made
in this vicinity during the past six
months. The purchasers appear
to be immigrants from the eastern
states. The active demand has
necessarially increased prices so
that land considered of little value
a few years ago now bring round
prices. No one is objecting to this
prosperous statet affairs, unless it
be those unsupplied at the present
time.

to the Portland Oregonian, dated
February 5, says:
The nomination of Thomas J.
Cleeton. of Portland, to be dis
trict attorney for Oregon was not
sent to the senate today aa ex
pected, for the reason that the
president has not conclude the
investigation intu his qualifica
tions. Chris Schueliei'd nomin
ation will not be withdrawn until
Mr. Cleeton's name is sent in.
The Washington Post says that
Senator Uourne has learned
through the incident that ap
pointments are made by and with
the consent of the senate.
To which the Oregonian adds:
"Thomas J. Cleeton. w ho has
been recommended for United
States district attorney, j-eceived
the congratulatioas of his many
friends yesterday, but he was
without official news from Wash
ington. During the day he sent
several telegrams to members of
the Oregon delegation, Mr.
Cleeton is not counting his chick
ens before they hatch, and until
he is notified of his confirmation,
he is not doing much talking.
He prefers to wait until final ac
tion is taken at Washington."
Trie Barefoot Girl.
Of the Barefoot hoy the wins in heard ;
The sturdy lioy,
And a mother's joy ;
As lie trtpltfr alonii
With whistle and song;
Of the I'.arefoot i'rl, no. never a word,
l'oor little liari'ioot Girl.
But look at that I'urefoot Oirl ;
With Iiit cap all awry,
Fyes, roguish ami ply,
lrese tutti-red and torn,
Is a w hen they were born,
And hair tough in one tangled curl,
Poor little Bin foot tiirl.
For she's just a wail of the street;
Though happy at play.
Half starved all the day,
Anil her finders and toes
Are as bluo as her nose
Because she gets little to eat,
Poor little Barefoot Girl.
The Barefoot Boy is her pride and joy;
Mud pies ore their treat
From the dirt of the street.
Knriched ly an "orange leel,"
How delighted they feel;
They are happy without alloy,
l'oor little Barefoot tiirl.
But hunger w ill couie, und "home" she

Home? What w ill be there?
Only coarsest fare,
Not enough for a meal,
But more than a "peel ;"
And the poor little girl's almost froze,
Poor liltlu Barefoot (iirl.
Maybe at the 'Bar' the father stands,
And tastes of that hell
That's Known too well,
And the child she goes
Without food or clothes,
And the wife bears abuse at his hands,
Poor little Barefoot ( iirl.
Maybe tis the "song of the shirt" again,
And tho mother tries,
Willi tears and sighs,
To stitch trom "light"
Till late at night
To earn enough for food and "den."
I've heard the song of the "Barefoot
iirl,"
Tis the song of the times',
To the measure of rhymes,
And true to the life,
In this world of strife;
And wealth stalks by in the "whirl."
O! Poor little Barefoot (iirl.
O ye w ho have millions to spare
Take heed to the cry
And pass her not by.
