Irving Bath, formerly with The Independent, is owner and publisher of the Recorder. When a woman starts down the grade she usually finds the tobog gan well greased and the trip to me bottom, though often roueh dangerous, and full of filth, mire and sorrow, isqukkly reached, and the end is oblivion. A case in point is Mrs. Bradley, wife of the man who shot and killed Policeman Oittings in rortland last week, and who now a luguive lrom justice. She is the mother of several children and is said to have at one time been respectable, but that must have been a long time ago. It is said that she and her husband used to get drunk together; then other men supplied the liquor and took the husband's place in his home. Later she ran away with a man named Anderson, was arrested and lodged in the county jail in this city, but was set at liberty on her promise to go home and sin no more. She went home, but instead of taking care ot ner children and her hus band who had taken her back, she jumps on the chute for another rapid ride down the incline, and "hell has been popping" in the Bradley home ever since, until one night last week he starts out with a gun and fills the worthless carcass of Policeman Gittings full of lead. The policeman was get iing 9100 a monia lrom tne city, yet His wile ana children were per mitted to go hungry and cold while he bought booze and had a high old time with Mrs. Bradley and her sister, another female tarred with the same stick. Last week the K. ofP.'s and the Portland police department gave Oitting's remains a human burial, something tbey were not entitled to. But as lie had been a member of both or ganizations, tbey could do no less. While the body was being lowered into the rround. Mrs. Bradley and I her sister, accompanied by another! Whether it would be appliable to small hardwood stumps I do not know, but it is worth a trial. The principle is the same as in burning charcoal, and I presume would apply to any wood that would make charcoal. To clear land of large stumps, dig a fair sized hole down by the side of the stump and build a fire of pieces of good firewood, laid snugly against the stump, Grad. ually cover the fire with soil, and keep covered; if well started and kept covered by occasionally throwing more soil on where it is likely to break out, the fire wil continue burning until the whole of the stump is burned into char coal. On some of our large fir stumps, 10 or 12 feet across, the fire will burn two months or more, and follow roots down 10 or 15 feet underground. Here's Good Advice. O. S.
