Mount Scott News. A lactory has been established at Grossalmerode, a small city in Ger many, near Frankfort, for the man ufacture of telegraph poles of glass, The required strength is secured by reinforcement of strong wire threads. One of the principal ad van faces of these roles would be their use in tropical countries, where wooden poles are soon de stroyed by the ravages of insects and where the climatical influences are ruinous to wood. The price of the poles is S6 lor a pole of the length of about 33 feet. The Ira perial Post Department, which has control of the telegraph aid tele phone lines in Germany, has or dered the use of these plass poles on one of its circuits. Mount Scott News: Strawber ries blooming on the commons, raspberries in the gardens, must look strange to Eastern people, who see snow and sleet at this time of the year, as a rule. The fine Ital ian climate Oregon is blessed with should cause her inhabitants to be grateful forever. Riches is not all in life, if the outside is gloomy and forbidding. Here we not only en joy good weather, but all the luxu ries of life, Including good health. At a meeting of the board of di rectors of the Jamestown Exposi tion company last week a financial statement was read showing the to tal liabilities to be (2,400,000. de tailed as follows: Due the govern ment on the $1,000,000 loan, (900, 000; due on the exposition first mortgage bonds, $400,000; due on current liabilities, $668,000; due on stock subscriptions to the exposi tion, $432,000. Just before the train pulled out for Port land John Mason, the colored por ter, put in an appearance and all who saw the expression on his face thought he was struck dumb with astonishment. For a Good Square Meal The Hood River Glacier says that on Monday afternoon the track laying crew of the North Bank road followed by a construction train, came in sight of John Koberg's place, two miles east of town. Tuesday noon the trains had reach ed Bingen, and there was great re joicing and considerable excitement over the first train into the future metropolis of the North Bank. Track laying is now going on at a rapid rate. Side tracks are being laid at Bingen, and the road will be pushed westward from there. We met a man the other day, says an exchange, who declared that he had all the business he t aa coma nanaie. ana saw no reason why he should seek for more, when he could hardly keep up with what he had. The time is not very far away when that man will find out that his trade is falling off. Will he advertise then? Not he. He is too wise. He will decide that he must cut out the little non-essen tials like advertising, and then busi ness will get worse. After a while well, we can see his finish. From the door of each of these establish ments protrudes a brass spout and a handle. There is also the cus tomary slot and a notice stating that only pennies can be used. All that purchasers haye to do is to put in their pennies, turn the ban die, and hold their jugs to receive the half pint of milk which is thus released from a 20-quart tank. If they need a pint of milk the per lormance must be gone through second time. The advantage of the device is that it enables the owners of the premises to shut their shop at reasonable hours and the custom ers to purchase milk at all hours of the day and night.
