Hillsboro Independent. D. . BATH. Editor and Proprietor. From Sherwood. ftegnlar Correspondent, (Too Ltti (or last atk.) James Brown, after clearing up and otherwise improving his farm, situated about one mile east of town, has concluded to quit farming for a time at least and has rented his property to some Portland par ties tor a term of five years, the lessees purchasing all of the stock and farming implements. Mr. Brown has not decided where he will find a home for himself and family during the intrim. The first person encountered on coming down town the other morn ing was Wm. J. Edwards, connect ed with the Sherwood livery stable, approaching with a box of "El Cap itan" under his arm and a broad smile upon his face. We complied with a request to "have one on me, the significenee of which implied that the generous impulse was prompted by a ceremony performed in the city of Ilillsboro the day pre vious by his honor, the county judge, in which William was legally united to his affinity, Miss Ada Leedy, of West Tualatin. "May they live long and prosper." K. Mitchell, editor and manager .of the Cowlitz Times of Kalama Wash., was in town Wednesday on a business visit. Mr. M. conduct ed the ilillsboro Argus several years, retiring about ten years ago and moving to Washington where he has since resided and issued the above named paper. An epidemic of grip has appar ently visited this region lately. Chas. Ash pole, merchant of Mid dleton, has been lately attacked by a severe form; also Harris Hardin at the Middleton depot, while many others have been experiencing the disease with varying degrees of se verity. W. T. Jones, a tombstone mason, was in town and erected some mon uments in the Hoodview cemetery for residents of this place. Mr. Jones is located on the East side in Portland and has had considerable work in his line in this locality. A young man came rushing into a business house here a few days ago and attracted attention by care fully looking over the premises, of fice and elsewhere where he had re cently been loafiag, when the clerk inquired of him what was wanted. His top coat was missing, accord ing to his story, but when shown that he was wearing it, he did not stop long enough to explain his absent-mindedness. A public marriage ceremony oc curred here Sunday morning, the contractine parties being Miss Sel- ma Hanke, daughter of the local shoemaker, and Henry Halwarth f Stafford. Rev. Doescher of Ore gon City, officiating. Miss Selms i .! v.1 1 u. am! mv was raisea in iaia yi many friends were present at the ceremony, wnicn u i rL.r.tian.T.titheran church on the ith side of town adjoining me corporate limits. Miss Susan Gillfillin of Portland, drove into town Saturday in a bug gy and while engaged in conversa tion with a friend near the hotel an up freight train arrived which frightened her team causing it to run away down the principal street. At the bank corner a sharp turn was made after crossing the railroad switch causine the buggy to over turn and hurling her violently against the ends of the ties of the main track. She was picked up unconscious and carried to a doc tor's office, and later sent to a Port land surgeon for treatment, on the evening train. It is reported that besides several lacerations of the aoatn and body a frarttir of both bones above the right ankle joint was sustained. PoaUtry Wanted. J.
