During the cold snap the price of eggs jumped from 30 to 35 cents, and the hens are so tickled that they have quit lay ing. Miss Grace Ballard is now working for the Lowengart wholesale millinery house in Portland, in the trimming rooms. Many cameras snapped the beautiful snow and ice scenes about town this week, something new and wonderful in this part of Oregon. Pursuant to his promise, State Printer Duniway is "making good," and the re duction in the cost of printing to the state has already begun. Joe Uroeker made a large shipments of baskets to the Portland market this week, manufactured at bis willow-ware factory in North lhllaboro. Miss Stella Boscow has accepted a posi tion as stenographer with the Mason- Ehrman Wholesale Grocery Co. of Port land. She commenced her new duties on Monday of this week, and is much pleased with her work. The P. Attorney Benton Bowman has for the third time leen appointed to a position as stenographer during the legislative sessions at Salem. On Tuesday morn ing Mr. Bowman was named as superin tendent of that department and all the clerical force was directed to report to him until further notice. He is a good roan for the Important position, and his friends here are glad that he received lh appointment, as it speaks well for his work at past sessions. Tuesday was the coldest day ever ex- iierienced in this section of Oregon, ac cording to the "oldest inhabitant." The Mrs ftlimit town did not all agree, but the one at ralmateer'e con fectionary is supposed to be correct, and at 7 o'clock in the morning registered 3 degrees below zero, and the one at Schulmerich's corner pointed to 'i be low at the same hour. Anyway it was cold enough to bring out the tassel caps, ear muffs, carfs and other fancy articles of head wear so popular in the East just now. i Attention is called to the petition to the county court for good roads pub lished elsewhere. Every taxpayer in terested in the welfare of Washington county will sign this petition and for ward it to Dr. J. P. Tamiesie, President of the Board of Trade, Hillsboro. No one who is forced to travel over the roads of this county but will admit that there is plenty of room for improvement. If work is to be done it should be of a substantial, permanent kind, and this is an opportunity for the taxpayers to get some returns for their money. The county court will certainly act if it is the wish of the taxpayers. The postoflice department has been trying to prove that the low rate of post age granted to newspapers and periodi cals is responsible for the heavy deficit each year. But the department's argu ment got a hot jolt the other day when the American Weekly Publisher's Asso ciation produced figures to show that the department is paving to the railways for carrying the mails $32,000,000 a year more than the express companies would charge for hauling the same amount .of tonnage. There is a big graft in the pos tal buniness, but it isn't worked by Ibe newspaper publisher. Polk Co. Observer. C. N. Black, assistant secretary of the 'I pell. First it froze up and on Tuesday It Portland Chamber of Commerce, who was here last ween representing me Bulletin, succeeded in securing a prom ise of $30 from ten business men of this city toward the payment of a one-page advertisement of Washington county in that publication. An attempt was made to get the county court to contribute something, but that body took no ac tion. Forest Grove raised the other $30 in about thirty minutes, and now Wash ington county, will have a full page write- up in the January Bulletin, 25,000 cop ies of which will be sent to people in the East, more especially to those now ask ing for information about Oregon. On Monday night of this week the mails out of Portland carried one of the largest single consignments ever sent out by the Commercial club of that city, says the Oregonian. The shipment weighed two tons and cost $250 in post age. I ue largest part ol the consign ment consisted of 5,000 copies of the New Year's Oregonian, which was do nated to further the publicity work of the Commercial club by II. L. Pittock, manager of the Oregonian. Included in this huge mail was a laree amount of broke its side drivers and has been sent to Portland to the shops where It will peedily be overhauled. The Oregon bureau of labor aud statis tics has compiled the f jllowiug facts con cerping the early history of apple and other fruits in the Oregon country: The Brut apple needs cre planted at Vancouver iu 1HJ5. The cut leaf or evergreen blackberry came from the Sandwich islands. The I-ewelliug and Btng cherries were originated by Seth Lewelling. The (ioldun prune was originated in lS7o by Seth lewelling. The Lambert cherry was originated by J. II. Lambert. In the year 1844 Henderson Iwellinjt brought yearling grafted apple, cherry, plum, prune, peach, grape and berry sprouts from Iowa, and hauled them across the plains. The first nursery was darted at Mil waukie in 1844 by Lewelling Sl Meek. In i860 a Mr. Ladd darted a ntircery at Butteville. in the same year George Set tlemier started one at Green Point. A nursery was darted at Salem about IS50. The first box of Yellow Newtown Pip- pius sold in Portland for $75 per box or $1 per apple. They were grown by Hen derson Lewelling. In 1853 Oregon apples sold In San Fran cisco at $2. 60 per pound. In 1845, 500 bushel of Oregon apples were shipped and returned a net profit of $1 50 to $2 per pound. In 1855, 6,000 bushel of apples were shipped aud returned $20 to $30 per bushel. The export of 1S50 as 20,000 boxes. In 1850 one box of Esopu Spitzenburg apples paid the shipper a net profit of $iS0 aud three boxes of Winesaps were sold in Portland for $102. From 1850 to 1809 the bi-monthly fall and winter shipments of apple, to San Francisco by steamer averaged 4,500 boxes. In 1857 Henry Miller received scions of Italian (Fallenberg) prune and graft ed them on bearing plum trees with suc cess. In 1858 Seth Lewelling set the first prune orchard, five acres, near Mil wau kie. J. R. Caldwell claim the credit for having set out the first commercial prune orchard on the coast.
