Dr. Withycombe, of the Oregon Ex perimantal sUtion, is a firm believer in the growing of flax as a substitute for Jute, and is quoted as say In recently: "There is no doubt that the Willamette Valley will produce as fine flat fiber as can be grown in the world. Out of this possibility thers ought to be means of aiding the solution of the grain sack and the hop cloth question. The fiber from the flax straw if grown coarse enough, would be a good substitute for (ate as raw mat era I for grain sacks. For years Hill and Harriman, joined to gether in a fight agaiust the Northern Pacific, held the route under an agree ment that provided for joint construction of the line. Then Hill broke away quiet ly, when he sen ted defeat for hia North ern Securities merger, and before Harri man could devine his secret purpose crews of engineers were driving final lo cations stakes from Wallula gap to Cape Horn, and right-of-wav agents were following closely upon their heels.
