tnce to the request of his father,
and not becauie she wished to shield
Carey.
Deputy District Attorney Tongue
last night gave out the following
statement:
"Aside from what has been told
by Mrs. Snyder and published
weeks ago. there was no evidence
given out today that would have
any weight before a jury as to who
were the murderers of Carey M.
bnyder. We have been greatly
hampered by fictitious stories in
the newspapers. As a matter oi
lact, Mrs. Snyder long since stated
that she believed that Ferry and an
other man were responsible for her
husband's death. It appears that
she has given no evidence that will
lead to conviction.
"It requires evidence to convict
any one ot murder, and evidence is
what we lack. Unless we get more
than we now have there is not the
remotest probability of a warrant
being issued and the case must be
dropped."
The Oregonian of Monday morn
ing has the following:
Mrs. Snyder thinks George Fer
ry should have be;n arrested long
ago and held on the double charge
of robbing the Forest Giove bank
and assisting in putting her hus
band out of the way.
With evidence which she has fur
nished, Mrs. Snyder thinks a con
fession could have been wrung from
Ferry if he had been confronted
with the facts, or that at least his
statement could have been proved
false in the light of the full revela
tions she has made to the officials
named.
The young widow is much cha
grined that some positive effort has
nut been made to connect Ferry with
the two crimes and says the apathy
of the officials is difficult to under
stand. She thinks it strange that
the bank has made no effort to place
Ferry under arrest and compel him
to tell what he knows about the rob
bery of December i, 1905.
"I do not see why Ferry was not
arrested," declared Mrs. Snyder last
. night. "The officers certainly have
evidence sufficient to hold him.
The way to have done it was to
have arrested him and forced him
to make a statement, in writing, of
his whereabouts on the night of the
robbery and on the night three days
later when my husband went to
Portland by appointment to meet
him and presumably was murdered.
Then to have confronted him with
the facts and see if he would not
have told quite a different story.
''Now, I suppose; after Perry has
read in the newspapers about each
development in the case, an arrest
possibly would be fruitless. He
lias had plenty of time to make his
story tally with the information
now known to the officials. He
could now say, in order to make
his story plausible, that he saw my
husband and gave him the pawn
ticket for his revolver, which would"
account for Carey's possession of
the weapon at the time of his death.
"It has been a mystery to me
why Ferry has not been arrested.
I cannot understand it. I believe he
is guilty of taking part in both
crimes attributed to him and the
other man, Rogers, and I think the
officials have been given facts suffi
cient to cause them to share this be
lief. Why they have not authority
to arrest him and 'sweat' him, I con
fess I do not know. It seems they
have plenty of authority to hold me
aud cause me to appear before them
as often as they choose.
"The conduct of the officers in
this part of the investigation seems
strange indeed to me. The only
way I can explain it is that the offi
cers leared they would frighten Fer
ry away by announcing their inten
tion to arrest him; but why not ar
rest him at once aud conduct a rig
id inquiry into his conduct on the
first lour days of last Decembet? It
Las been hinted that the arrest is
to be made sometime, and that stor
ies are now being given to the
newspapers to the effect that there
is no evidence to prosecute him,
witi: ttie purpose of leading Perry
to a feeling of talse security. This
seems nonsensical to me.
"The man giving the name of
Rogers, whom I think to have been
implicated with Perry in the rob
bery and murder, I saw but once,
and while I think I could identify
him, there is of course a possibility
ot a mistake 111 such a matter. Who
he is I do not know. He is sup
posed to have come from Kansas
City shortly lefore the robberv
The small interest the bank officials
lake in causing the arrest of Perrv
might lead one to suspect that this
man Rogers was one of the owners
of the bank.
"The letter I received saying that
the name of this mysterious third
man is Ellis and not Rogers, and
that the writer can prove his part in
the crime, has never been investi
gated by the Oregon officials to my
knowledge. The extent of their in
terest in it seems to have been to ad
vise R. M. Snyder to keep a lookout
in Kansas City for such a man.
The letter was written, apparently,
by someone in Portland. My theo
ry U that a woman with whom Rog
ers, or Ellis, or whatever his name
is, had had a quarrel wrote it.
I cannot think anyone would
write such a letter without having
some knowledge ot the case. Sure
ly no one would implicate a person
in such a serious crime without
some foundation. Yes, the letter
j as evidently written by a woman;
there always seems to be a woman
mixed up in these things," couclud
ed Mrs. bnyder.
The pretty widow has not yet
heard from her husband's family m
regard to the killing of her father-in
law. R. M. Snyder, in an automo
bile accident Saturday. She re
ccived a telegram yesterday, howev
er. from a sister in Kansas Uty, con
firming the news printed in yester
day's papers.
Mrs. Snyder seemingly is pursued
by some strange Nemesis, ana ai
thotitrh but 2t vcarsold. twice al
ready ha len made a widow by
murder. But she wears her weeds
well. She is a woman of rather re
markable beauty and apparently
has become inured to trouble, for
when the news of that fourth vio
lent death in her family was made
Vnnu'n to her Saturday niubt. she
bore the news bravely. The super
stitious would say that she was born
under an unlucky star, but Mrs,
Snyder does not appear to worry ov
er the fact.
Married when a mere etrl. her
first husband was killed by her own
brother. Then followed the death
in a streetcar of her brother-in-law,
a vounjrer brother ot Carey M. Sny
der. Last December her second
husband. Carev M. Snyder, was
murdered near his home at Glencoe
Oregon. Saturday, her father-in
law, R. M. Snyder, of Kansas City,
was instantly killed in an automo
bile accident.
The pretty sufferer by this chain
of distressing tragedies has not yet
outlined her plans for the future, or
if she has, only in a tentative way
Meanwhile she is eager that the
slayers of her husband shall be
brought to justice, and to this end
she will bend her efforts.
