There are about eight classes of
town killers, and every town is af
flicted with one or more of them.
First, those who go out of town to
do their trading; second, those who
are opposed to improvements; third
those who prefer a quiet town to one
ot push and business; fourth, those
who imagine they own the town
fifth, those who deride public spirit
ed men; sixth, those who oppose
movements not originating with
themselves: seventh, those who
oppose every movement that does
not appear to benefit them; those
who seek to injure the credit or re
putation of their neighbors. Prine'

A man fiesh from San Francisco
throws illumination arouud the
calamity that befell that city last
April. They were moving the de
bris from the ruins ot a huge sky
scraper there the other day, and he
looked on. Scores of bodies he
says were taken out from beneath
the ruins. In one spot what seemed
to be a family of five from their
proximity to each other and geuer
al appearances, was found. Under
neath ruins everywhere bodies are
found and instead of the small fig
ures at which the fatalities of that
terrible week are placed, he says
the victims are to be counted by
the tens of thousands, reaching an
enormous total. The true lacts of
the appalling loss of life he declares
are not for prudential reasons, dis

respondents. Corvallis Times.

Railway Croaatlea
The United States Deparment of
Agriculture has been taking an ac
count ot the annual consumption
by the railways of the country of
lumber for crossties, and the results
are somewhat appalling. It is fig
ured that in 1905 no fewer than 84,
000,000 ties were consumed by the
entire steam railway system, or the
equivalent of three billion feet of
lumber. As this does uot include
the large and increasing amount
used bv the electric railways, the
seriousness of the problem will be
apparent.
The railways are awake to the
gravity of the situation, though for
a reason different from that which
is arousing the anxiety of the gene
ral public or that portion which
gives a second thought to such ques-
tions. One is worried over me
supply; the other considers the 300,'
000 acres of woodland annually de
nuded to meet the demand of the
railways. The Pennsylvania Rail
road company, with no especial care
for the forestry aspects of the ques
tion, but with an eye to its own
needs, has begun the planting of
trees as a source of tie supply. How
tar this will come from meeting the
calls of the future from this system
alone will be seen from the estimate
made by an officer of the company,
that It would require the planting
of 1,300,000 trees each year, a forest
of 39,000,000 in all, and the perma
nent occupation of 15J square miles
of land allowing 400 trees to the
acre and thirty years for the growth
of the trees to the size required.
Perhaps the questions will have
to be settled ultimately by recourse
to substitutes for lumber ties, but at
present the concrete and metal sub
stitutes are little beyond the expert
mental stage. Other railways than
the Pennsylvania have begun tree
planting, but on a scale that is in-
finitestimal in comparison with the
annual consumption of from 80,-
000,000 to 1 10,000,000 ties. Atten
tion is therefore being concentrated
for the present upon better methods
for the seasoning of ties, greater ac
curacy in spacing, ana in general
upon such improved practice as will
secure the greatest service and the
minimum of wear and tear.

FACTS THAT TALK
THIS space has been purchased by Pacific Uni
versity. This same matter will appear in each
issue until the expiration of the advertising contract.
It is an advertisement that is intended to convey to Wash
ington county citizens a few facts about an educational
institution with which they are not unfamiliar. That they,
as well as others, may become more familiar with Pacific's
present standing, within and without Oregon, illustrated
literature, fresh from the press, may be had for the asking.
This literature is replete with facts that tell and figures
which convince. The articles are written by alumni and
students of Pacific. They are all well worth the reading.
Those contributed by students set forth present conditions
in the institution, and are convincing because they are
true. Of special interest are the articles written by
alumni, Hon. H. W. Scott, Editor-in-Chief of The
Oregonian and Rev. Horace M. Ramsey, Rector of
bt Stephen s Church, Portland.
Pacific University has the largest endowment of all the
pnyate college, in the Northwest. In buildings. Ubora
tones and library rt the best equipped Christian college
m Oregon. Not only does the amount of iu productive
fund, very far exceed that of any of ,he ir-titurion. in
Je State, but it greater than that of all combined. For
th reason P.afic ha. .Jw.y, been able to secure superior
uuctor. and ha. never had to depend upon the en
rollment of .tudenU for b income.
Pacific University in the past' ha, been rather con
rvabve the matter of advertising. And it mU
