ornaments stuck along the sides,
and there you are a completed cof
fin, worth at the uppermost some
$6 ot$3 or jfioor$i2. Here comes
the afflicted husband or wife or son
or daughter or brother or mother.
A coffin must be had. Time is
snort; the necessity imperative.
The coffin must be had. The Cof
fin Trust does business upon that
fact. What value is put upon this
coffiin? Forty dollars, fifty dollars,
sixty dollars, eighty-five dollars.
Every day we can see these plain,
cheap, and sometimes gaudy, coffin?,
which cannot by any sort of calcu
lation be shown to have a greater
value than a dozen or so dollars,
sell for five times that amount.
Why? Because the purchaser is
helpless, and because the seller has
uo pity in his heart.
The purchaser speaks for the
dead, acts lor the dead, is within
the awlul shadow of domestic grief.
The member of the family, whose
sad duty it is to purchase the cof
fin, feels that it would be indecent,
unseemingly, distasteful, utterly re
pugnant to the occasion to higgle
and haggle aud cheapen and squab-
ble about the price of what the
tieau man is compelled to have. No
husband wants to hesitate over a
mere question of dollars and cents
when the beloved form of the wife
needs burial. No wife will stop at
any question of filthy lucre when
her husband needs the last sad rites
her devotion can ever pay. The
parent will not quarrel about the
prke of the box which is to hold all
that is mortal of the darling child.
Nor will son or daughter combat
the Trust when necessity arises for
the seemly, decorous, dutiful laying
away of the father and mother.
Thus, while other trusts exploit
the living, the Coffin Trust exploits
tlie dead. Against other trusts we
have some chauce to fight; our neigh'
bors, kinsmen, friends, will cheer
us on in such a fight. Against the
Coffin Trust we have no chauce.
So it is that the Coffin Trust has
seized upon a coign of vantage
waicu makes ltirresistable. Heart
urokicn griet is to the Coffin Trust
its securest ally. The tears and
sobs of orphanage bring gold to itf
coffers. The unreasonable devotion
of the half-crazed husband or wife
becomes an ally of as remorseless a
lobber of human behigs as the world
has ever seen.
Jvver since God fashioned the
world and put the breath of life into
man and woman, nothing has ever
leen known that was so insatiable,

'ZtT'HlS space has been purchased by Pacific Uni
fy yersity. This same matter will appear in each
issue until the expiration of the advertising contract.
It is an advertisement that is intended to convey lo Wash
ington county citizens a few facts about an educational
institution with which they are not unfamiliar. That they,
as well as others, may become more familiar with Pacific's
present standing, within and without Oregon, illustrated
literature, fresh from the press, may be had for the asking.
This literature is replete with fads that tell and figures
which convince. The articles are written by alumni and
students of Pacific. They are all well worth the reading.
Those contributed by students set forth present conditions
in the institution, and are convincing because they are
true. Of special interest are the articles written by
alumni, Hon. H. W. Scott, Editor-in-Chief of The
Oregonian and Rev. Horace M. Ramsey, Rector of
St Stephen's Church, Portland.
Pacific University has the largest endowmenl of all the
private colleges in the Northwest. In buildings, labora
tories and library it is the best equipped Christian college
in Oregon. Not only does the amount of its productive
funds very far exceed that of any of these institutions in
the State, but it is greater than that of all combined. For
this reason Pacific has always been able lo secure suerior
instructors and has never had to depend upon the en
rollment of students for its income.
Pacific University in the past has been rather con
servative in the matter of advertising. And it makes
public these statements now, only because there are
reasons why its seems advisable. Pacific still adheres to
its policy of desiring students rather than numbers; of
maintaining creditable scholarship rather than crowded
enrollment
