It is now the middle of June and we have had 110 hot weather so far this year "This Greater Oregon" is putting up a great record as an ndvertisment lor its cool summer weather. Mr. Bryan writes to his friends that "It is time to call a bait on .socialism in the United States. The Populist platforms on which Jiryan jointly ran, both in 1896 and 1900, favored a greenback currency and the government ownership of railroads, which may be as far in socialism as he desires to go, and father more will recieve the support of reasonably conservative citi.enr. John M. Pattison, Governor of Ohio, died at his home in Milford O., Monday afternoon of Brights disease. Death came suddenly and was entirely unexpected by his family and physicians. lie suffered considerable oain Sunday evening, but later sank in a quiet sheep. When his physician called Monday morning, the patient was found in a comatose state from which be never rallied. Mrs. Pat tison and two daughters were at the bed-side when death came. Gover nor Tattison was a war veteran and ex-congressman, and was the only democrat among the state officials elected last Fall. Andrew L. Harris, Lieutenant Governor, who, tinder the Constitution, becomes Governor during the rest of the term for which Mr. Pattison was elected, is a Republican. The oath of office was administered to Gover nor Harris Monday night by Judge Fisher, at Katon O. That a Bryan wave, spontaneous and not manufactured, has set in is unmistakable to unprejudiced ob servers wherever they look. It is quite as obvious to Republicans as it is to Democrats. And the Press funis good reasons '"for the better opinion which Americans now hold of him than when they twice had the opportunity to vote for him." One of these reasons involves an error not unnatural to a Republican p.iperof the Fast. It is Bryan's supposed abandonment of "his free silver iailacy." Mr. Bryan has not which consisted in the quantitative theory of money the theory that the value of money is determined by supply and demand. He was for silver coinage in order to in crease the supply of money when gold was scarce, he has not concern ed himself about silver recently because the increase in the supply of gold has augmented the quantity of money more than he had hoped for from the tree coinage of silver. In other words, nature has supplied the quantity of money in gold which Bryan demanded of the government in silver. To say, then, that he has changed his position is a misrep resentation. But most significant of all signs with reference to Bryan in the action of the Missouri con vention of the sth, which, in obedience to a demand from the people ot the counties, names Bryan as the candidate who was defeated by corruption in 1896 and who alone can unite the Democratic party m 190S. Such a union of the party is to be hoped for, for unlike the "union" of too, it means union Oregon amd union Pacific Three Trains to the East Daily will huve on said round trip ticket from jiotnUon their line to New port, Yaquina and De troit at very low rate. u)'xl for return until October 10, IMii, Three dar ticket to Newport and Ya uuina, cood iruinif Saturdav ami return ing Monday, are also on aale from all Kant Side point, 1'ortland to hu'ene, incluaive, and from all Wt Side points, enabling people to and apend Sunday at aeawide.
