In the California building at the Lewis aud Clark exposition there ii a showcase which is surrounded all day long by a crowd of interest ed people, it majority of whom are women. The reason for this is that the case contains a bewilder ing assortment of precious stoues, and the remarkable circumstance is that these stones are all from the mines of San Diego county, Cal. San Diego, the most southern county in California, produces now about 100,000 worth of precious gems each year, among them kun- sites, a new gem, the value of which was discovered by Prof. George F, Kunz, after whom it was named. A great number of specimens of kunzite are exhibited, among them one of the size of a small waluut, which is insured for $1530, and a pendant valued at $q6o. Kunzite has nearly the brilliancy of a dia mond, and looks much like one, ex cept that it is ot a delicate lilac color. The gems are mined extensively in San Diego county, and are cut and polished for the most part in city of San Diego. Besides kuu zite, there are exhibited in the showcase toumalines, hyacinths, beryls, topazes and many less valu able stones. A single large speci meu contains in the rough, white, yellow and blue topszes: tiink and white beryls, black, pink and green tourmalines, garnets, and smoky and white quartz crystals. The stones are comparatively cheap, be ing valued at from $6 to $2$ a car at, and are extremely beautiful. San Diego people believe that in the gem discoveries they have found a new resource that will make their country world-famous. Died a Pauper Rich Once. This was done, and Joe Meek, fired bv a devotion to what 1 e deemed a great cause, jumped to his feet, making a five-minute speech in favor of the provisional government as advocated by the American element. Suddenly ho jumped over an imaginary line, drew a mark w ith the ton of his great trapper's boot, and said: "Theme for a divide, follow me. Here's your American territory "vit here. Everybody come!" Of the 10J present 52 slowly tied across the line, ranging themselves by the side of th trapper and then started the nitcl. tt of American government. j This is the true version of Meek's art in securing the great dominion of Ore- gun, Washington and Idaho to the Unl ted States. He lived to see Tualatin county changed to real Washington county, and died full of honors, in 1875, his remains now resting in a quiet little churchyard four miles north of Hills hero, and resting beside him is Virginia, his Indian wife.
