Month after month (or aix yeara the
I'aciflu Monthly haa bswm (urging tteadU
ljr forward. 80 excellent have been
aoma o( the iaauea that only the moit
superlative adjectives could do Justice to
the excellence o( the press work and a
high character of the magazine. It is
only (air to say, however that in the
July number the magazine haa reached
a plane which might well be envied by
any twenty-five or thirty-flve-cent ma
gazine in the country. It is one o( the
wonders of modern progress that such
an excellent magazine as regards color
work, high-grade illustrations and the
general character of the reading matter
may be gotten up and sold for 10c. As
a matter of (act, the paper alone in this
splendid July number is worth from
fifteen to twenty cents in each copy of
the magaxine. The paper used for a
large part of this number is probably
the heaviest which has yet apiared in
any ten-cent magazine, and its quality
is the finest. From every standpoint,
the publishers have far surpasited all
their previous attempts and have placed
the magazine where it is not only a
credit to the Coast and entire West, but
it will not suffer by comparison with
any magazine published anywhere.
This July number is called the Lewis
and Clark exposition number, and in
justification of this there are six special
articles on the exposition, covering the
architecture, the Forestry building, the
exhibits, the statuary, the social life and
significance of the exposition. The lat
ter is written by Eva Kmery Dyd, author
of "The Conquest," "McLougnlin and
Old Oregon." There is albo told in terse
style the story of the Lewis and Clark
exiedition. There are between seventy
and eighty illustrations of the exposi
tion, of w hich ten are full page. In the
race for supremacy among the maga
zines of the West, the Pacific Monthly
by the issuance of this number has left
its competitors far behind in style,
make-up, quality of reading matter, and
in general interest anil value. The Pa
rifle Monthly is now the recognized
Western magazine.
"Yes," remarked a country merchant
to the editor of a South Dakota paper, "I
certainly have a snap. The wholesale
houses send me duns every month and
draw on me at sight, but if I send a bill
to a furuier he comes in swearing mad
and quits trading at my store. While I
am hard up for ready money those who
are owing me are sending cash in ad
vance to mail order houses. If I don't
contribute money to any cause people
say I am a hog. Every day I am ex
ected to dig np for everything that
comes along, from a rallle ticket to a
church fund, by people-who say I ought
to do this because they do part of their
trading here, but my friend, Montgom
ery Ward, neither buys rallle tickets nor
helps the church fund, and yet gels the
catm-in-hand business; and if I were to
circulate a subscription paper among the
city wholesale housrs where we
trade I could gut the horse laugh proper.
If I sell a pair ot pants I must treat the
family to candy and cigars ; if I buy a
load of potatoes I must do the same.
Customers who are able to pay, hang on
to their money while I pay 10 per cent
at the bank to get ready cash. During
hard times and ioor crops I have a big
htiHinexs from people who are willing to
trade with me providing I can duplicate
catalogue prices an J wait until after bar
vest for my money. My scales weigh
too heavy when I sell sugar and too
light whon I buy butter. I am a thief,
a liar and a grafter. If I smile I am a
soft-soapy hyprocrit; if I don't, I am a
chump. Yes, this is certainly a snap."
And then he looked over $10,000 worth
of book accounts, all good, and wonder
ed w here he could raise $XH) to pay a
sight draft, due tomorrow.

Reaular Correspondent,
Uay appears to be quite plentiful in
this locality this season and of good
quality and selling at reasonable prices.
Five passenger cars with every seat
occupied and standing room at a pre
mium passed this station Monday
morning bound for Portland.
Olo Johnson, a Sherwood boy has been
advanced to a position of brakeinan on
the local passenger train on this line of
the Southern Pacific.
More new buildings, both buHiners
and residence property have been erect
ed In Sherwood the present season than
for several years past, combined.
Mrs. Hansen, of Iowa, a sister of Mrs.
Hans Jurgensen of this place is here on
a month's visit with her sinter, and also
sightseeing at the Lewia A Clark fair.
Meeks 4 Wilson is the new firm erect
ing a new building for the purpose of
otningup a "new" butcher business in
Sherwood town. A new broom, etc."
George Savior, the jeweler accompan
ied by some relativea of Yamhill county
left lor the coast at Salmon river last
week for an outing of two weeks or
more.
Cut worms, the pest of onion raisers
have made their annual nnwelcomed
visit again this season and a war of ex
termination or limitation is going on at
all points in the onion fields.
Mr. and Mrs. Sabastian, of Grange
ville, Idaho, who have been visiting
friends here during the past month re
turned to Portland Saturday and left
the next day for their home in the sage
brush state.
Just how a business man of town can
spend half his time or three days in the
week sight-seeing ia Portland, have a
surplus of business at the same lime,
and generous enough (imaginary) divide
some of it with a rival is an inlgina dif
ficult to understand to the unitiated.
But to thoee accustomed to "hot air
blowing" through a hat the remarkable
feat is not so difficult of apprehension
after all.
Padded gloves and the Marquis of
Queenberry rules are ignored in fistic
encounters here, hence the resultant
damage is greater and the rounds cur
tailed to few in number where the ex
tinguisher consists in the bare fists on
ly. Al Bealand went down and out in
the third round yesterday in a fight of
this nature, while his opponent escaped
with a few scratches. The damage to
Al'i anatomy consisted in a laceration
of the integument over each optic,
which required suturing, peepers
dressed in mourning and entirely closed
from the resultant bruising, anil a frac
ture of the nasal bones complicating the
case.

When a splinter has been driven into
the hand it can be extracted by steam.
Fill a wide-mouthed bottle nearly full of
hot water, place the injured part over
the mouth and press it slightly. The
action thus produced will draw the flesh
down, and in a minute or two the steam
will extract the splinter, also the in
flammation. Try it and be convinced.
National Magazine.
An exchange tells of a man who died.
The very first day in heaven, as he
wanted to go sight seeing, an angel
guide was given him. Before long he
noticed a number of persons each draw
ing ball and chain. "How is this?"
he asked. "Isn't this heaven?" The
Angel smiled and replied : "Why these
are not bad men, but they came from
Oregon and we have to chain them or
they would go back.
