Therie carefully trained pets Irfonn the principal roles in dramas and comedies and ia addition give a complete vaudeville programme. Finit comes the grand military drill in which one hundred pretty, prancing ponies tuke part, lead by the witte ony leader, "Koaeberry." They march and coun termarch and go through difficult evolu tions with the precision of highly trained soldiers. Then comes the joy ous May-Pole dance when clustered around the saw-dust arena, some dozen children mounted on the dimunltive Shetland's go through the mazes of the dance. The demure ponies enter hearti ly into the fcxtive spirit aa well as the youngsters and no prettier sight lias ever Iron seen. Then comes the saga cious dogrt who perforin the part of flre loddies. A iniuature house is in flames ; the Intrepid liie-inon rush to the rescue with their tiny bote-carta, soon have a Htroam playing uxn the burning build ing; a baby is rescued from the flames ; I a patrol filled with dog policemen dash es up and asaists tho dog flre-mcn, etc. The clown dogs; tonies; and monkeys all the while fumixhing lots of hilarity for the little ones. This is but an out line of the many startling wonders to be seen with Co.ad's California Equine, Canine and Simian parados when it ap- ears here. Terrific Race With Death. "Death was fust approaching," writes Ralph F. Fernandez, of Tampa, Fla., describing his fearful race with death, "as a result of liver trouble and heart disease, whiih had roblwd me of sleep and of all interest in life. I had tried many different doctors and several med icines, but got no benefit, until I began to use Electric Uittera. So wonderful was their effect, that In three days 1 felt like a new man, ami today I am cured of all my troubles." Guaranteed at all drug stores; price 50c. Weather Report. The past week lias lieen showery and cooler tluin ucmil, especially during the aflerniHins. All vegetation made slow growth, and more sunshine ia needed ior Kanlcns, nop, corn and potatoes. The first crop of alfalfa la being cut in the southern counties and average yields are lieing secured. In few localities rain damaged the cut alfalfa, hut the rain did more good than harm, as the second crop will )e greatly benefited therehy. Fall wheat and barley con tinue to Itead nicely, hut on account of cloudy, cisil weutherthe stalk is beconi ing to rank. Spring wheat and oats have tuiule slow progress, and reports regarding the condition of all grain are on the whole unfavorable. The Hessian fly is reported to have done some damage in Yamhill county, and the grain a phi is Uviiming numerous in other sections of the Willamette valley. Hops are uneven and the yields are expected to 1h less than last year, not withstanding the increased acreage. 1'otatoes that were frosted last week have revived and the setback they re reived was not serious. Grass and stock are in fine condition and sheep shearing is drawing to a close, strawberries are ripening slowly. Cherries, peaches. pears, prunes and apples pioiuise light er yields than usual, although the prune crop will probably be heavier than last year. Newspapers of Today. Reputable newspajx-rs do not like to say harsh things of anyone. It is a mistaken idea that the pa pers prefer vilification in their news columns to commendatory articles. Some newspapers may, but they are few and far bctweea, and the distance between is growing still wider; nor would any paper that pretends to stand for decency hesi tate for a moment to make every honorable amend when it is shown that a wrong ha been done. The newspapers of today is the friend and upbuilder of the clean people every where. The reputable citizen has nothing to fear at the press. On the contrary', the pres ent day newspapers aids and pro tects the reputable community. It is only evildoers and lawbreakers that need fear the savings and in fluence of the press. They and they alone are the ones who gain the in jurious protection of the ridiculous libel laws that mar the statute books oi some of the states and hamper the press in its efforts to secure justice and fair treatment lor all classes of people.
