A school meeting has been called to meet in the school house, in the city of Hillaboro, on Monday, the 5th day of June, at 1:30 o'clock In the afternoon, for the purpose of voting on the ques tion of authorizing the school directors to contract a debt by borrowing f 1,500, or such other sum as may lie necessary to erect an extension to the present school house and authorizing the direc tors to issue therefor negotiable inter est bearing bonds. The present school building has become too small for the steady growth of Hillaboro and a larger school bouse la absolutely necessary. The addition is needed, and the bonds should and undoubtedly will be voted. Portland people could aak for no nicer day than yesterday for the opening of the fair. Rain fell in the morning, but along before noon the eun came out and a beautiful Oregon afternoon followed. A 2 year-old son of Christopher Pttere, of Cornelius, full from the porch at their home yesterday and dislocated hia left elbow. Dr. F. J. Bailev waa called and reduced the dislocation. Dr. and Mra. Tamieaie went to Port land Wednesday alternoon to arrange the booth for the Hillaboro Condenser. Ttiere will be a demonstrator in charge and the cream will be served with fruit. It will be a novelty to people from the Eastern states who do not realize the excellence of evaporated cream. Laat Sunday a delegation of the Mod ern Woodmen of the World of Portland, asaiated by the members of the home lodge, dedicated a handsome new monu ment over the grave of the late J. W. C. girla and their escorts of the Pacific University on Monday evening. Kate Gardner has begun an action for divorce against her husb.md, Leon J. Gardner, alleging that about a month after their marriage, he started in on a course of cruel and inhuman treatment until about five weeka ago, when the plaintiff, unable to stand the treatment longer, left him, that her maiden name waa Katie Or oh a and she wialiua it re stored to her. On next Tuesday Washington Coun ty Day at the fair there will be a re ception, at the state building bv the ladies of the I-ewia and Clark club, after which an adjournment will be taken to the Administration building where a program of an hour will be given, con sisting of Seechea, singing, music by the several bands, etc. Remember the train leaves at 7 :12. Lamkin reculved from Washington City, from the son of an ex-Confederate soldier a small gavel made from the wood of a tree which stood on "Big Hound Top" at Gettys burg. In the head of the gavel ia im bedded a bullet, probably shot there during the Civil War, forty years ago. The handle of the gavel ia made of wood from a tree cut in Reynold's (irove. Mr. Lamkin turned the valu able relic over to Commander Geo. F. Rea, of Ransom Post No. W, G. A. R. Only 75 tickets were sold at thia sta tion yesterday morning for the opening day of the fair, though some dozeu or more persons went to Portland on the Wednesday night train. There waa an immense crowd in attendance. Presi dent Roosevelt, at the White House in Washington, touched the golden key which Bet the machinery on the fair Cjunds in motion, and now the great wia and Clark exposition ia a reality. It ia the biggest thing the Pacific Coast country haa ever seen and is bound to prove a success. Everything ia in readi ness and the attendance will surely be far greater than the management haa figured on. Success to the lewis and Clark fair and to the people who have worked night and day and expended their money and time to bring this great Oregon country to the attention of Eastern people who are coming here by thousands. The Hillaboro Board of Trade held a special meeting last Wednesday even ing, with a very good attendance. The object of the meeting was to make ar rangements for the, coming Washington County Day at the fair. G. A. Morgan was appointed a committee of one to so licit funds to pav for the bands and pro cure badges Eleven dollars was se cured in the room. A committee of three was appointed to make np a pro gram and procure a speaker. It was moved and carried that the I- and C. club lie asked to look after the floral part of the program. Mayor Cornelius waa named as the committee to look after the music, and authorised to procure the two city banda. The standing com mittee waa instructed to meet thia even ing and report. Much enthusiam was manifest in re gard to Washington County Day at the Exposition anil it waa decided to work with a determination to get oat a crowd unit make aa eond showing as possible for Hillaboro. Foreat Grove and McMin- ville are going to send big delegations with banda and flaga flying, and it ia up to the people of Hillaboro to take a hand in and show the people at the fair that this city is not altogether dead. Christ Maurer occurred Monday at her home near the Bethany church, and the funeral was held at that church Tueeday. Prof, and Mra. Woods of the Pacific University entertained the dehatora, Will Raainuasen, Frank Peters, Horace Thomas and a few young lady friends Wednesday evening.
