Sam Hogan drew the rains over the

senger train was detained here several
hours.
The old established firm of Pool &
AmIiihiIo has been dissolved, at Middle
ton, Stephen Poole retiring from the
business. The 6rm has been engaged
in the' mercantile line in that place for
the past twenty-two years. Mr. Poole
will shortly leave for Pennsylvania, his
old home on a visit.
The net receipts of that burglary af
fair at Sandpit was only about one-tenth
the amount stated in last week's issue.
Not very many residents around here
have 11,010 lying about their premises
w hereby thieves could bo tempted to
break in and steal.
The pipe foundry at Oswego again re
sumes operations this week after a sua
pennon of several months. Numerous
orders for future delivery have been re
ceived which it is expected will require
constant work day and night, for some
time, to fill.
New, Man In an Old Church.
Forest (irove, Or., April 3 Today
will long be remembered by the mem
lers of the locul Congregational church
as one of the brightest church annals.
This afternoon services wore held in re
cognition of the new pastor, Hev. II. W.
Itoyd, and this evening was given over
to the celebration of the tiOth anniver
sary bf the church's founding. Iloth
meetings were attended by large audi
ences that showed an earnest interest in
the organization. The church was
founded in 18-15, and is the oldest or
ganization of its denomination in Ore
gon. In pioneer days its meetings were
lieM in the same log-house that was oc
cupied by Pacific University, At that
time the church and college were closely
united. Kov. Harvey Clark, the first
pastor, was at the head of the church
nntil ISM, when he was succeeded by
lr. Thomas Condon. Among the early
pastors were: Rev. Sidney Harper
March, the first president of the univer
sity; Uev. K. Walker, Kev. Cushing F.l
lis and Uev. II. Lyman.
Some of their successors have Wen
Hey. A. Rogers, Ilev. A. Uice, Ir. 8. M.
Freeland, Kev. Morton D. Dunning and
Hev. Daniel Staver, who was in charge
until the present pastor.
Tonight's exercises were largely a his
torical review of the church work. C.
II. Walker, of Albany, sent a paper tell
ing of the period from the founding up
to 1H.")!. A paper covering the years in
the old church was given by Kev. M.
Kells, of Tacomn, Wash. Hon. A. Hin
man, president of the board of trustees
of Pacific University, also spoke of early
days.
Principal II. L. Hates, of Tualatin
Academy, spoke on the new church.
Kev. P. 8. Knight was on the pro
gramme for an address but could not at
tend. Hev. Mr. Hoy J has been occupy
- ing the pulpit since December, when he
came here from Massachusetts, but had
never formerly received hi charge until
today. Hev. J. M. Barber presided and
offered the greetings of the local associa
tions. Hey. C. K. Chase, of the Ilassalo
Street church, of Portland, represented
his fellow-clergymen, and delivered the
charge to the new pastor. The address
to the church waa given by Rev. D.
Staver, who was pastor immediately
preceding Key. Mr. Hoyd.
Others who participated in the service
were: Professor J. H. Robertson, of Pa
cific University ; Hey. L. F. Helknap, of
the local Mellidit church, and Key,
II. (tilpatrick, of Hitlxboro.

week in Portland visiting with friends.
Lloyd Fisher left for Hoquiani, Wash.,
on Monday.
The Ladic Lewis and Clark club met
at the home of Mrs. Mae lilosser, Tues
day. All officers were present and a
very interesting meeting was held. At
it close the charming hostess served a
choice lunch of chocolate and cake,
which waa enjoyed by all. The club
will hold it next meeting at the home
of Mr. Boyd the first Tuesday in May.
Mis Mary "N. Chase,, State President
of "The Equal Suffrage Association of
New Hampshire," addressed an appre
ciative audience nt the Congregational
church Tuesday evening, on the subject
of "Woman Suffrage." She Is a speaker
of rare ability, and succeeded in estab
lishing a club at this place, with the
following oflicers: president, Mrs. J. W,
Barnes; vice-president, Mrs. Anderson,
Sr. ; secretary, Mrs, F. W. Cady ; audi
tor, Mr. Anderson; treasurer, Mr. I.
C. Fisher. They will call it the "Poli
tical Study Club."

The Ninth grade set out class trees

another "Robert Burn," and one after
the queen, "Victoria."
May Enochs, of the Eighth grade,

A teacher in one of our nearby schools
the other day was explaining to a class
of yonngster the five senses: Hearing,
Seeing, Smelling, Feeling, Tadting. The
teachr said something aWut running
with the feet and smelling with the
nose, when a little fellow spoke out.

nose runs."

this stage Miss Elizabeth Hemphill, the
principal, sent Master Billhardt home.
The Wy'a mother considered that
bit of cheese waa nothing to make such
a fuss aWut," and she went to the
school and stated her attitude to Miss
Hemphill. The result was a scrimmage,
with the teacher and the janitor on one
side and the mother, the Wy and the
cheese on the other the battle, accord
ing to the dispatches, Wing a draw.
