Honolulu, March 1. Mrs. Jane lath rop Ntanford, of San Francinco, widow of Unites! States Senator Inland Stan ford, died at 11:40 o'clock laat ni'ht, forty minutes after she was taken ill, at the Moano Hotel here, under suspicious circmuHtances, pointing, in the opinion of the phyHiciun who attended her in her dying hour and seemingly in that of others, to jioisoning by the adminis tration of strychnine in a vial of bicar bonate of.nodu given just before retiring. Mrs. Stanford herself, when found by a guest of the hotel w ho had heard her groaning in her agony and suffering from conviilnions, declared, "I have been poimmed," and her last words were : ''This is a horrible death to die." An Omaha special of March 1st says The Union Pacific today successfully tested an experimental gasoline car on suburban tratllo. It will le sent to Portland, Or., for trial, and if it proves a mcceas more cars are to lie built. The car is controlled by one man, and the Sieed is seventy-five miles an hour. These will tie sent to different parts of the state with the re quest that they lie circulated. Any per son desiring one of the etitions may secure it by writing for it. It Is the in tention to secure the requisite nutnler of signers as soon as poaaible. It it pre dicted that at leant 2t(0 signer can be aecured in thia county alone. The $1,000,W appropriation measure pro vide money for state institutions, in' eluding normal schools, charitable, re form and penal establishments, state nniversity, Oregon Agricultural college. The particular protest throughout the tale has len against the normal school clause. Of the entire appropriation, about f:H1.0X) was for various schools, including the state university. A like petition will soon 1 in circulation in Washington county, it it has not already been started. 1 School Notes.
