THE INDEPENDENT, HILLSBORO Official Paper of Washington County. Entered at tho Poatofflco at Hllla t oro, Oregon, for transmission through th malls as second-class mall matter. Official Paper of WasUniton County. BY 0. W. BATH Lent begins this year March 8. Remember the old folks' concert. Easter falls on the 23rd day of April this year. The weather man predicts a little rain for Oregon. Next Wednesday is Washing ton's birthday. Remember the old folks' concert at the opera house. Old folks' concert at the opera house next Wednesday evening for the benefit of the Congregational church. Newell's bills to transport insane patients to the asylum by asylum attendants, and to regulate the sale of fertilizer, both passed the senate. The money order business at the Portland postoffice was $500,000 greater in 1904 than in 1903. The Japanese were the largest buyers of international orders. The bill introduced by Senator Haines to authorize Washington countv to appropriate fa, 000 for the Lewis and Clark fair, has been signed by the governor. William Cullen Bryant, probably the best known publisher in the United States, died on Wednesday at a sanitarium in Plain field, N. J., of a stroke of apoplexy. The Tillamook Independent, a strong advocate of the saloons dttr ine the last election, is dead. The plant was purchased by R. M. Watson, editor of the Herald. of finding out what the law really is. If they were published in every newspaper in the state, then ' igno rance would be a crime." But as only a favored few get a copy of the Laws of Oregon, published in book form; the great majority of our people know little about the laws passed in gross lot at capitol headquarters. By publishing them in newspapers, the cost to the stte 1 would be but a little more than is now paid. The legislature will adjourn today not later than 4 p. ni., according to the joint resolution adopted taut week. There will be no otliclal notics taken of the de velopments in the cane of Senator Mitch ell auii no adjourned st anion next win ter nor tlio tension prolong)! unless ( something should tiapn today to change its mind. The members realize that they can do nothing toward elect ing Mitchell's succeaaor until he has re signed or has been removed, and they believe that if his health shall hold out he will keep the office prolably to the end of his term, owing to the long ktrug gle which he evidently Intends to make of hit trial. Wheat sold on the board of trade in Chicago on Wednesday at the highest point for years, $1.20 per bushel. It is predicted that the price will reach the $1.50 mark. Frank Raisinear. convicted of the murder of his wife, was hanged at Bridgetown, N. J., Wednesday morning. The rope broke the first time, but the second attempt was successful. Joe Florelello, the Italian who murdered Amelia Siiianni in Tort land about a week ago, saved Mult nomah county about one thousand dollars ourt expenses by very ap propriately blowing his brains out just as the officers were about to nab him. General Lew Wallace, author of "Ben Hur," and a veteran of the Mexican and civil wars, died at his home at Crawfordsville, Ind., Wed nesday, aged 78 years. His health had been failing for several years. He was at one time minister to Turkey. His last words were, "I am ready to meet my maker." Members of the Oregon legisla ture made a trip to Newport last Saturday. A special car took them to Corvallis where they inspected the Agricultuial college and were entertained at a banquet. The party . then continued the trip to the seacoast and report the weather warm and fine, in narked contrast to the weather on this side of the coast range at that time. Newell's bill for the transporta tion of the insane passed the senate with but five votes against it. Cro isan of Marion said sheriffs were as humane in conducting insane to the asylum as any persons could be, and that the bill would increase the patronage at the disposal of the asy lum and cause delay, but, said he, "You are helping the Salem hog I don't really favor the bill, but I'm going to vote for it and stand in with the Salem hcg." Portland and Return 85c. Tho Southern Pacific la sow selling round trip tickets to 1'ortland from Ilillaboro for M cents, good going Satur day P. M or any train of Sunday, re turning SuudUy and Monday, giving all Jay Sunday and Monday in Portland The name arrangement applies from Portland, fivina all Portland iicople a chance to visit valley points at greatly reduced rates. No Need to Worry. We note some fear of posmbility that the revelations in the land fraud cases are likely to do Oregon and the fair some barm. All of which is ridiculous. Which is likely to do the moat harm, to suffer under such conditions or to make an honest eSort to improve them? Isn't St. Louis a better place in which to live than it was before Folk began his work? As a matter of fact it is thoxe communi ties which open eyed bear the diseases of the body politic that are entitled to the contempt of the world rather than thoe which try to cure them by meth ods however drastic. In this same connection some timid otitis are expressing the fear that the city may suffer a setback after the fair i over. Why should it? Portland has not undertaken a contract that is to big for it; it has not overloaded itself with debt. The nioner which it has spent it can afford to upend. It Inn projected a fair which in many respects will be the most satisfactory ever held but it w ill not break its back financially by doing so. We know of many building enter prises that were not undertaken becau e there is so much being done lu that di ruction it was not considered advisable to initiate any others. But the money to do the work is still on hand and the intention to commence it slill remitinc The greatest advantage wh may exiect from the fair is that it will be a self re velation; we will discover what reallr need to make of the city w hat na ture intended it to be. We have here the money to do it ; we do not need to go out hunting foreign capital. Itut out' side capital will co.ne. Many of those who come here will find this a promis ing field for investment. There are sev eral big building projects the work en which will lieiriu soon and there is at least one great hotel project which is rapidly reaching a stage when it may be counted upon as a certainty. 80 far as houHe-building is concerned it Is going steadily forward and will continue to go, The matter of apartment houses is not yet overdone and the only ones that cau possibly suffer after the fair are those which fail to come up to the standard Let no one worry about the period af ter the fair; let them rather worry about the fair itself and do everything they can to make that enterprise a gieat success. The rest will take care of it self. Portland Journal. A Very Close Call. "I stuck to my engine, although every joint ached and every nerve racked with pain, writes C. W. Kellaniy, a locomo tive (ire mean, of liurlington, Iowa. "1 was weak anil pale, without any app' tite and all run down. As I was about to give up, I got a Ixittle of Klectric Hit ters, and after taking it, I felt as well ai I ever did in my life." Weak, sickly, run down people always gain new life, strength and vigor from their use. Try them. Satisfaction guaranteed by all druggists. Price 50 cents. Intensive plans of the Union Pacific system and the Southern Pacific for new locomotives, cars and other equipment, and the in stallation of 600 miles of automatic electric block signals have been an nounced. It is estimated that an expenditure of $S,ooo, coo will be necessary to complete the work. The new equipment will be used on the Union Pacific, Oregon Short Line, Oregon Railway & Naviga tion and the Southern Pacific and will le ready this year. Til First Klrrttoa. New Tork was not reckoned a pivotal state when George Washington was elected first president of tho United States. The Umpire Stnte was not even represented In the electoral coUegw, having passed no election law. ltnode Islnnd and North Carolina hnd not adopted the constitution, so only ten of the thirteen original titles purtld pated In the balloting sf ITS'.). Tiers were then seventy-one electors, each of whom voted for two candidates for president. The candidate receiving tho highest vote was declared president, the next highest vice president George Washington received C!) rotes, John Adams 34; John Jay of New fork re ceived 0 votes, ft. II. Harrison of Ma ryland 0. Several others had one to four votes. In 1702 fifteen ststea wore represented in the" college, with 135 electors. Washington received 132 votes, and John Adams was again ond, with 77 votes. The bill introduced in the legis lature for publishing the laws en acted at Salem in all newspapers of Oregon, was killed before it had a real good chance to breathe.
