Salaries of several Washington county
odicials have been raised as follows:
The sheriff in addition to his salary of
flHOO, is to receive compensation for
traveling expenses and his deputy is to
lw raised iroin $.r0 to $75 a month. The
ueputy county clerk is to be raised from
50 to $75 ; deputy recorder from 40 to
$50, and assessor from $3 a day to $1200
a year. Just why the treasurer's salary
should not have been increased is not
given. He receives the astonishing sal
ary of $50 per month and his responsi
bilitie re certainly full r as great as that
of any other official. While the fathor
of that bill; wasdoing a good thing, he
ought to have pushed it all along the
line.
The editor of this paper received the
other morning the first installment of
his annual reward for fighting, bleeding
and dying that some one may have
soft job at Washington at a fat salary
This first installment consisted of
pack ago containing some turnip, musk
melon, tomato, radish and lettuce seed.
The remaining installments' will probab
ly drift along as our good benefactor
happens to think that we may be needed
as a cog in a wheel of the machinery he
will need back of him to secure a renew
al of his hold on his Job. We are al
rea.lv under lasting obligations to the
mighty power back of these munificent
rewards, and with the reception of an
other grist will tie ready to fight, bleed
and die. Hoxie (fa.,) Sentinel.
A man one day stopped Horace Gree
ley on a street ot New York and said
air. ureeiey, l nave stopped your pa
per." 'IIaveyou?"said Horace, "Well,
that's too bad," and the old white hat
went on its way. The next morning
Greeley met his sabecrilier and said, "I
thought you had stopped the Tribune."
The gentleman replied, "So I did."
"Then there must be some mistake,
said II or see, "for I just came from the
office and the presses were running and
the clerks were as busy as ever, and the
compositors were hard at work, and the
business was going on the same as yet-
yesterday and the day before." "Oh,"
replied the anhscrilier, "I didn't mean
that I had stopped the paper; I stopped
only my copy of it, because I didn't
like your editorials." 'Tshaw man,
said Greeley, "it was not worth tny time
to tell me tin h a thing as that; if yon
expect to control the the editorials ot the
Tribune by the purchase of one tub
Si riptioo a year or if you think to find
newiaper worth reading that will ex
press convictions that will agree with
yonr own you are doomed to disappoint
ment." The paper is still running and
Horace Greeley has been dead for many
years.

In his "Simple Life" Rey. Charles
Wagner thus defines the best religion:
"Your religion is good it is vital and
alive, if it nourishes in you confidence,
hope, love and a sentiment! of infln
ite value of existence; if it is allied with
what is best in you against what is worst,
and holds forever the necessity in lie-
coming a new man ; it it makes you un
derstand' that pain ia a deliverer ; if it in
creases your respect for the conscience
of others; it it renders forgiveness more
easy, fortune less arrogant, duty more
lear, the hevond less visionary. If it
loes these things it is good, little matter
its name; however rudimentry it may
be, when it fills this office it comes from
the source, it binds you to man and to
God."
A Very Clone Call.
"I stuck to my engine, although every

pain, writes C. W. Bellamy, a locomo

to give up, I got a N.ttle of F.lectric Hit

ever did in my lite." Weak, sickly.
