Along the Route.
Miss Lydia Fieren has returned from
Portland where she spent several months
visiting with relatives and frieuds.
Frank Sinclair has been enjoying an
enforced vacation during the last few
weeks. He found that running a saw
mill and nursing a felon are two jobe
that one man cannot succesaf ully hold
siuiultaueoualy.
Christ Jansen has replaced ths old
rail fence north of his orchard with a
new board fence, the spick-and-span ap
iwarance of which proves it to be a uV
' cided improvement over tlie old order of
things.
The planking on the county bridge
between the Kerry and the Paisley farms
waa found to be slightly oat of order one
morning, owing to tlie heavy rainfall
during the preceding night. Although
the road was closed to heavy vehicles,
horsemen and light rigs could cross the
bridge with perlct safety. One mem
ber of the bridge crew proposes in case
of emergency to send the carrier across
by means of a specially constructed
pneumatic tube.
Emil Zink owns a hog of enormous
die. When seen grazing with his cat
tle, this fellow may be mistaken for a
yearling ox, which it equals in size and
surpasses in weight. In honor of the
land of his owner's birth, he rejoices in
the name of Ivan Ivanovitcb Schweiu
off sky, though the animal is not as tierce
as its name suKgesta.
Dad's age is fourscore years and three
vet he ia as active at work as a man half
his age. At present he may In seen
daily clearing land north of Chris Nel
son's place. Whenever his employer
attempts to excel the bid veteran at
grubbing stumiia he ia invariably thrown
into a state of profuse perspiration and
quits in disgust. It is probably not
known that the old gent is the carrier's
dad.
Messrs.. John and Fred Sinclair are
busy ditching their land between their
place and Mr. Kiley's orchard, the road
and the adjoining land is converted into
a veritable lake during the winter
months and their ditching is intended to
put an end to the existence of this lake.
Messrs. Flowers, Huntley, Milton and
Vankirk are new additions to the pa
trons of the route.
Lot Rutchelder is visiting with his
brother, Wm. Itatchelder.
Mr. Connell recently discovered the
fragmentary remnantu of the carrier in
the ditch, and at once assuming the role
of the good Samaritan, took charge of
the entire outfit, placed the same in his
own rig and continued the interrupted
trip, delivering news with such dispatch
and promptness that the highly pleased
patrons, expressed the fervent wish
that he would stay with the service per
manently. The obnoxious gopher is relentlessly
persecuted with variable and uncertain
success by means of tra, gopher guns
and diverse poisons but the versatile
John Snyder uses none of these, instead,
he employs a hunter, a coal-black Afri
can slave, the name of whose tribe is
Felis niger domesticus. While serving
with the colonial troops in the (ierman
colonies in Africa, he picked this fellow
up for a mere song. No one under
stands his barbaric dialect except his
owner who therefor exercises absolute
control over him. Even in the wettest
weather the poor creature may lie seen
out in the fiehls, motionless, statue-like
for hours at a time, watching the gopher
ran, never stirring until his wily prey
appears, when with unerring aim he
pounces upon it ami carries it home In
humble triumph to his master, who re
wards his faithful slave with a pan of
cold milk and brielly remarks, "Doo fer
dommter Koter. '
Distinctly audible grumbling went up
from the route the other day when the
Portland morning paper was not deliv
ered. it grew and rose to an ominous
sound when the last patron was reached
who immediately ifot into his rite am
hotly pursued the neglient aintnt of
whom he sternly demanded to know the
w hyness of. the wherefor.

"All Doubt Removed."
The Portland Journal of Tuesday con
tains the following in reference to the
electric road from Portland to Forest
Urove via llillsUiro:
The result of a careful examination of
local conditions by a party of capitalists
and contractors Iroin Nin rrancisco re
moves all doubt that the Oregon True
tion company will lie successful in build
ing an electric railway between Portland
and Forest Grove.
"As soon as the necessary franchises
are secured our tioople will lie ready to
clone contracts or luiilding and eoim
ping the road," said Edward Records to
day, on his return from a trip over the
protiosed route.
Mr. Record is president of the Atlas
Construction company of San Francisco
He Is accompanied by E. W. Runyon
vice-president of the Central "f rust com
panr of San Francisco, and Messrs. Er
ickson and Peterson, members of the
Atlus com puny.
1 he parly haa made a thorotiuli in'
sMM:tioii of the route surveyed by the
Oregon Traction company, and the con
ditions affecting the enterprise,.
" We have iecn very lavorahiy itn
I ires ed by the proposition," said Mr,
ecords. "The route is a good one,
Should our concern do the work we will
build the line to Forest Grove w ithin
six months from the time work is com
incnceil in Portland."
Mr. Record's opinion is that it will
require nearly $700,000 to build and
equip the line. His statement that it
can lie done in six months w ill be pleas
ing news to Forest tirove jKMiple, who
thought more than a year would claiee
before they could get electric, railway
connection with Cortland.
The only cause for this delay lies
the (litlictilly of getting materials
promptly. The demand for steel girder
rails is so strong that the mills are tin
able to fill orders promptly. Should the
contract be closed at once and an order
for rails placed immediately the line
could be complete.! and running as far
as the grounds by July 1 at the latest.
But it is imimssible to close any con
tracts, savi Mr, Record, until the local
francaise quest ion is finally settled.
The line is designed to carry trallic
safely on a running schedule of 45 miu
utcs from Portland to Forest ( i rove.
A strong movement has lsHn started
ftt Tillamook to secure an extension ol
the Oregon Traction's line from Forest
Grove to Tillamook. A public meeting
called by Mayor Colin, w ill he held at
Tillamook next week to take action on a
suggestion that a subsidy lie raised to
induce the company to include Tilla
nook in its plans. In the event of such
an extention the Wilson river route
would probably lie seriously considered.
There is an old survey of this showing
it to lie a feasible route.
