A man's stomach holds more than his head. Those who missed the St. Louis exposition can have consolation and their money's worth by taking in the Portland fair next year. With Mexico and Chiua both trying to adopt the gold standard, there was but little lett for which the populists could be thankful. It is thought that St. Louis will fail to realize the magnitude ot her worlds fair achievement until the exact number of millions of deficit is footed up. A merchant may know he has the best values In town, says Rusty Mike's Diary, but like the prisoner who knows he is innocent, it wou't do him much good unless other peo ple know it. The man who goes without his dinner to save money is about like the man who saves money by not advertising, And the woman who doesn't like a bargain is as hard to find as the darkey who has no use for watermelons. Fostoftice roMers seem to Ix: con fined to uo particular .section, but bob up about so often here and everywhere, and up to date a cap ture is out ol the question. Last Saturday the safe in the IId River postoflice was cracked and the knights of the jimmy got away with $231 m stamps aud $173 in money. Of course there is no c lue. The great fair at St. Louis is a thing of the past, aud all those tine buildings are worth less than the lumber of which they are built. Four hundred dollars has been of fered for the (V'ashington state buildinsr which cost $2.1.000. The structures will go for what they will brinz. which will not be much. It costs money to run a world's fair. man county, Washington, fifth, which on its merits was a tie with Clackamas county, and Spokane county, Washington, sixth. Had the exhibit from this county been on exhibition for the fiit time the award would undoubtedly have been different. . The Ilerlngton, Kan., Sun says that "the big pumpkin sent to the world's fair by Litts, of Abilene, did not win the prize. The blue ribbon was carried off by a miser able Colorado product reared on ir. rigation waters stolen .from Kansas. This offer is for new sub scribers only. The establishment of a poultry experiment station in California is indicative of the growing import ance of the study of fowl diseases. Tuberculosis that has now come to be popularly kuown as the white plague, and which is known to af fect so many of the domestic ani mals, claims its quota among towls, aud particularly chickens. The disease is spread by traffic in laying hens, as most authorities maintain that it is not transmitted through the eggs. Clackamas county was awarded first prize at the Grange fair at Portland, not because of merit but as a complement and because every exhibit had been secured for that fair alone and were fresh and er feet. Washington county secured second prize, but its exhibit had been on exhibition before and was not so attractive as it would have been had it been gathered express ly tor the Grange fair. Clark county, Washington, took third prize, Linn county fourth; Whit- A newcomer in Kansas asks the Kl Dorado Republican to tell how the approach of a cyclone may le discovered. The editor does not kuow but he comes pretty near the real thing when he says: "When the porch chairs begin to fall over each other, the bricks from the chimney tops tumble down on the roof and the air it full of flying tree tops; when a plate glass window or two crashes in and the driving rain skips over a 12-foot porch, dashes under the outside door, dances across the vestibule, rushes under the in side door and covers the hallway floor; and the grandfather's- clock rolls off the landing to the lower floor, sparks from the telephone, as big as a bucket, go off like a gun, a quarter section of shingles tears of the roof to give the rain and hail a chance, and the roar on the outside is so terrific that you have to scream to make your family hear you, it is not at all necessary to begin to be afraid, as the tornado, or what ever you are pleased to call it, is do ing business in the next county." Oregon is something of an egg producer but Russia is the largest seller of eggs in the world, bhe sells nearly every year to other countries 150,000,000 dozens of eggs; aud her sales are constantly on the increase. China is supjxjsed to lie the largest producer ot eggs in the world, but that country keeps no eggs statistics, so it can't be told exactly, but the pig-tails are great egg eaters, and with the exception of a few million she lets the Jap anese people have, she keeps the rest for home use, and as there is over 400,000,000 people mere, 11 takes a good many eggs to go around. The smallest farm home found anywhere in the empire is al ways supplied with a great flock of hens. Speaking of woman's rights, our old friend Dooley says: "What does a woman want iv rights whin she has priv'leges? Rights is th' last thing we'get in this wurruld. They'rth' next thing to wrong They're wrongs tur-ned inside out. We men have th' right to be sued ft debt instead iv lettin' th' bill run, which is a piiv'lege. We have th' right to trial be a jury iv our peers, a right to pay taxes an' a i right to wurrk. None iv these j things is auny good to me. There's I no fun in thim. All th' r-rights I tnjye I don't injyc. I injye th' right to get money, but I nivtr had anny money to spind. Th' consti chooshin guarantees meth' right to life, but I die; to liberty, but if I thry bein' to free I'm locked up; an' to th' pursoot iv happiness, but happi ness has th' right to run whin pur sood, an' I've never lcen able to three her yet.
