which these figs were taken liear two

large. The late Jacob Prugger planted

back over the bar a little incident oc
curred which made them hold their
breath and proved to them that a ier

going to Dave Jones' locker when taking
a trip to the seal rocks in a small boat.
While on the bar, the little craft came
in contact with one of the breakers, and
for a few seconds there wa consternation

Wan No Abduction.
St. Helens, Or., Aug. 111. Michael
Piertier, the old man charged wi'h the
alxluclion of Mary Kobiunon, had his
preliminary examination liefore Justice
Wutkins this afternoon. Ih-puty Dis
trict Attorney Powell appeared for state,
an.l Dillard A; Day for the deft use.
. Piertier wan committed to await the
action of the t irand Jury, the ufatterof
bail U'ing taken tinier advisement.
Mary Koliiuson test i lie. I that she left
her home on the morning of July IN, and
' went to the scow oceup'ed by Piertier.
1 She to'd him she waa in tro.ihle and in
tended to commit suicide, lie endeav
ored to in.lu -'e her to return to her par
ents, and promised that if she did so he
would gtrawhten matters up with them,
lull upon her refusing he consented to
once il her and take her away. The
first night they Crtiiipe I at the scow.
While at th" scow, the girl testified
that she w rote the note stating that she
had committed suicide uud Piertier at
tached it to her dress skirt an.l left in on
the woodpile on the St. Helens wharf.
lu the morning ol J uly ISO they crossed
Nigger Creek in a rowlxiat, and Piertier
secreted her under the ledge of a bluff,
where she r. 'in, lined until ubout '2 A. M.
of July. II. They moved several places
in the woods .lining her stay in thi
neighborhood, Piertier going to town
.luring the day an 1 bringing her food at
( night.
The gii l's testimony was that nothing
was done without her consent, and that
she could have returned to her parents
at any time she desired to do so. On
the night of Tuesday, August !, they
sailed to a point opposite the lighthouse
at the mouth of the Willamette, and
from there walked to Vancouver, where
Piertier tried to g t her admitted to the
Sisters' School, but failed.
From there the pair went to Oregon
City, und drove from that place to Beu
vet ton, w here Piertier made an agree
ment for li.-i- to be kept in the Beavertoit
Home until she was IS years of age, hi
intentions being to marry her at the
end of that time.
Martin White, Sheriff, testified that
I'iertiei 's statement to him was the same
with regard to the places where the girl
was concealed us that given by herself.
Cross-examination fail. si to shake the
i girl's t. 'stin y in any respect, and was
directed to bringing into the case the
young man whom she at first accused of
IVing her seducer, but this was ruled
out by the Justice. The girl's testimony
was given in a straightforward, unem
barrassed manner, she seem to have
no sense of shame. The coiirtr.sim was
lacked with spectators, minor lieing ex
clude I. The feeling Hgainst Piertier
is intense, and the conduct of the girl is
imt considered anv defense for him.
