COVSTY OFFICIAL PAPER. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 80, iswa. good roads the AA FARMER' The Good Roads Convention in Portland last week, bad among its principal speakers the president of Washington Good Roads Associa tion, who in his remarks said:. . "We will get no aid from the General Government for the build icR of roads until we ask it The , government ' has done nothing for the farmers of the country, but a great deal in the matter of provid ing rivers and harbor.. It is high time we urged upon Congress the importance of expending money on our wagon roads." Right on the heels of this remark comes the announcement that the national government will spend 51,750,500 for river and harbor work in the Pacific Noithwest, an amount which would do vastly more good if used for the betterment of hfghways. Were the local com munity to receive 50 cents from the state and 5 cents from the nation for each dollar it put out upon its roads that met the approval of the government experts, over twelve millions would be expended in Ore gon and Washington, resulting in lively times during the building and permanent roads which would double the value of country proper ty. To make a good road means shortening distance to all practical intents and the closer to market the more valuable th farm.
