I. Ants. ICHEST of all the groups of the great division of the ani mal kingdom knowa as In serts Is the order hymenon- tera, which name means "membrane winged." These Insects are character ized by their thin, delicate wings, their strong, supple bodies, their powerful Jnwa and. commonly, a formidable sting. Most characteristic of all, how over. Is their very interesting habit of living together In colonies and acting in sucn a way as to be of service to ono another. lue commonest representatives of this remarkable order are those which we call antH, bees and wasps, there be ing many different kinds of each. We nave all becoino more or less familiar with the bees, and nearly every boy na girl knows that there are three kinds of bees In ono hire itamely, the quean, tbe worker and the drone. This nine fact Is true of ants and wasps, there being In each case appar ently three sexes. Hut careful inres tlgotion and patient watching of the development of the young have shown that the worker, or neuter. Is really an unaevelopcd queen, or female, and that the conditions governing its de velopment depend upon the wishes of the other Insects and are regulated by the kind of food given to alio Insect or Inrra. Now, soino of my readers may wish to know why ants are put among the so called "membrane winged" Insects when apparently they have no wings ot all. The answer to this question might be found by tearing open the nest. Should tho reader do so be MIST SOT SET KIBES. SALEM, On., July 8.
