Mr. . U. Hustou President. 7 8 lerline, and show patent No. 671646, date Nov. 17, 1896, for a procesi of hardening and tempering steel that doea what the other claims fur hi process. It eeema that Clark la poor mecbanlo and ha not been able to promote his invention. Caaterline ia alao la very moderate clrcumstana c, and has been working on hi pro- cea for aeveral year without an at tempt to secure letters patent, but now use good business Judment and liberally advertises. Clark was bunt log for a process for hardening cop per said to be known by the ancients, lie did not fully succeed, but com pounded a bath that it ia good for steel. The baths used by these me cuaulcs ase not claimed to be Identl cal, but the discovery is probably in dependent, and may be to different that a patent will issue to Caaterline But if the processes do not infringe I he value of each I lessened. ?)oth men affect to believe that they have fallen upon the treatment practiced by the armorers who made the Da- mascua bladea of old, the point of which might be bent and thrust through the hilt, and when released would fly back straight aa before. There ia much of romance in those old stories, and the wonderful quail ities of auch swords weredue as much lo the historian as to tha smith who fashioned tbem. There is not a hand saw on a carpenter's bench, that ia, one that he will use. but can be bent till the point touches the handle, and when released will fly back, leaving no kink. It la not well authenticated that the ancients tempered steel bet ter than we. do, and it is mora than likely that both Clark and Caaterline have made discoveries that are .orig inal advances In handling steel. The wheel was 18 Inches la dimeter and would move with the faintest breath of air. Mounted on a pole so as lust to clear the top of the tree it would as It turned, scatter glents of sunlight all throutre the tranche. At first the birds eyed the thing with suspic ion, but soon it was for entertain meat while tbey ate, and they tiock ed to the tree over which the wheels flashed In rather greater numbers than before. Mr. McCollidr got no cherrise, i getting none thl year and expects none next though Her man his son suggests planting trees along the fence row at the back side of the pasture, hoping to furnish rumote feed in? it round where the bird may congregate while the trees trees in the home orchard may have time to mature their fruit. "The right of way for practically the entire distance has been secured," Mr. Gradoo said to ao Oregon iao reporter "that these small tracts of land needed might have to be acquired by condemnation proceed logs, but I do not believe that When we make another effort to come to terms there will be any further dim eulty. I expect thl matter will be settled in a very short time. ' With construction work Inaugu rated within 80 days' time, we shall be able to run our can into the Willamette Valley country Inside of a year. We expect to be able to make the run of 25 miles within little more than an hour's time,, and will put on a schedule and will pro vide for hourdly trips from each ter minus. The first car will probably leave each end of Ihe line at six a. m. and the service will continue until 11 p. m. 'We will Introduce a new feature in suburban railroading new so far a the Northwest to concerned. Our cars wilt be operated oa train orders, with agents stationed at the towns en route. In addition, each car will be equipped with a telephone outfit, and at certola stations or aidlngs each car 'will -be compelled to Mop. A small arm run oat from the car will be brought into contact with the tele phone wires of the company, and the dispatcher will talk to the men In charge of the car. It ia the Intention at first to run single coaches, but If the Iraflic demand it, each car will pull a trailer. "The country the new line will tap ia one of the richest sections of the Willamette Valley. There la a pop ulation tributary to our line, outside the City of Portland, of something like 10,000. "Ultimately Ihe line may be ex tended beyond the termloue planned at present, but the first work will be At eleven o'clock Friday ulgbt last William Wall was aroused by a cry of fire. He saw a grest light and vaulted out of bed, catching up hi pantaloons a he ran. Down stair he realized thU it was hi own dwell ing that was burning, and that It was nfcessary to get hi wife and child without delay. Mr. Wall used her spare time with Ihe yi.ungater and got out with only her robe-de-Duit. Mr. Wall -and his father, who was ileepiug below, found no fire-in the parlor and succeeded in getting a par lor oigan aud some books out, bull everything else burned. The fire was quick. The loss figure up 11250, no insurance. . The origin of the fire is speculation. There had been no fire in the stoves since seven o'clock of the mirning of Friday, the family having been away driving with Father Wall and hi brother, who were l.ere from London, England. Even on the return at night all went to bed without light ing the lamp. The fire originated In the kitchen part of, the huse. There Is a theory though tbat a bur glar either purjKjfely or accidentally furnished the torch. Mr. Jj.hn Wall's residence on Basel iae tree I was bur glarised the night - before. The prowler bad enterud by deftly cutting a pane of glass from .the window and with his hand released the bolt that fastened it. He had gone into all the rooms of the house except the sleeping chamber, aud had made a thorough search. The sleeping rooms had not been entered because they were fastened on the inside by barrel bolts. In the dining room the floor was strewn with half-burned matches. showing that it bad been the place of a minute seaich.. Mr. Wall, uncle of M., is touring America and known to have been shadowed a part of the way acrow the continent. It is sup posed that this party wanted the money that Mr. Wall is carrying for bis traveling expenses. While in Hilisboro he made hi home at J. M.'sand was there on Ihe night of the housebreaking. Nothing was taken that night. Friday night the prowler might have mistaken Wm. Wall's father for his uncle and thought that the latter was spending the night with William, wherefore that residence was the scene of his adventures. The match lighting may have been rejated with the result that an accidental fire resulted, or lo anger at his lack of success he may have deliberately kindled the fire. So far as known Mr. William Wall lost nothing by burglary. There were three gold watches in the bouse but the remains of these have been found since the fire. Mr. Wall haa not got around to building yet, though that will be taken up. His first con. cern is to get clothes for self, wife and childien.
