" Saturday, March 7, Whelock Sim mons, one of the two oldest residents of ilillsboro, the other being Michiu I sent a never falling stream of blood through his body for ao many years failed and the end was. Whelock Simmons, or as wo bet-t knew him "Dad" Simmons was born May 4th, 1820, at Bradford, Pennsylvania. At the ago ol 21 he went lo Illinois where as a farm la borer ho worked for a time, then re turned to his old homo. Ho stayed two years, when with his earnings he again sought the fertile prairies of Illinois. Ho bought 40 acres of land and established his bachelor home. Here he labored until 1348, when his health failed. A change of climate was advised. The rumors of the California e-old fields floated back and so filled young Simmons lhat in the spring of 1849 lie felt himself equal to an emigration rerots the continent to the Eldorado. Wh m he saw tho banks of Feather river he became enamored of Ihe pre)-ct of turning Ihe waters of lhat stresm It' one side and working in tho lad for tho gold supposed lo have lodged there. He was one t.f the company of nlneho undertook I he enterprise. After working a while ho waaoflertd $2000 for his Interest. Ho wanted more, but took less, lor tho scheme was an utter failure. Disgusted with mining he slatted for Oregon and reached Portland in September 1850, 110 wore 3 off than nothing. Ha soon paid this, however, aud then drifted to Ilillsboro. which then was the metropolis of this part of the world He found employment with Mrs, Lucinda Hill, I widow, whoha Iseltltd her husband then living on a tract; of land Just south of the town of Ilills boro in 1845. Cupid made a tour ( f the country that fall and sent a dart into tho hearts of both these worthy people, and they were united in wed. lock Dec. 6, 1850. Hill bad died before the enact ment of the donation land law, but in 1850 cod cress passed Iho bill ao that when the Hill claim camu to be officially listed at Oregon City It was Whelock Simmons and Lucinda 8immons who were recognized. There seems to have been no Hill heirs, at least none out here. Simmons was a farmer and as such he was successful. Ha built the "best house" in the county, on "Ore? gon City road." It was the envy of all good house wives for many years The structure was erected about 1861 and still stands, though further from the road, Baseline stret t, thau it did in the beginning. Tho road l as boon changed a few yards lo Ihe north of tho original track. Hills boro at tho first was a townslght pre emption under the provisions of a law of congress that allowed 40 sort s of government land to be taken by a county for a county seat town. Bui about 1873 or a-rhnps it was 1874, Simmons surveyed Simmons' addi tion to Hillslx.ro, aud began to sell lots. Tho addition is Ibat part of town south of Baseline street. Mrs. Simmons, Lucinda, died in 1879. In 18.80, Simmons wedded widow Lucy Ellen Bnrgan. To them two children were born, Her bert P., a thrifty, Industrious young man, now a resident of Hillsliorn, and Orvll M., who Is with his mother at Victor, Colorado. In 1889, Sim mons went to McMinnville. Asa farmer be was fairly suit-essful, though he rcver worked lo bard. At the Yamhill town he Isgan branching out Into spsculations. At this he was not a fucces-i. Ho sold Simmons' addition lots In Hillslaito and invested in McMinnville, not al ways wisely. Ho ht money, houses, wife, family. After the di vorce he again wedded. This Ihird woman he outlived, though It is un derstood that during tin bs' years ther were etraiiged. A few yis ago, Simmons returned In Hillslmro, and here he remained until ovt rtak. en by death.
