The French paper is not familiar

TARIFF KEV1SIOX.
Answering the question, "What Is
the outlook for tariff revision at this
session of Congress" put to Congress
man Tongue of the First Oregon Dis
trict by an Oregonian reporter on
Tuesday evening last .that gentleman
gave this very lucid analysis of the
matter:
"It would be Impossible to revise
the tariff or to consider tariff revision
at this short session. It is too big a
SJbject, and will occupy too much
time. Whenever it is taken up it
means a very vigorous conflict. The
Ei.-t will demand a reduction of the
duly on food products, lumber, wool,
hides, coal, etc The West, on the
olher hand, which produces thete
things, will oppose reduction on that
liue, and will insistou a reduction on
that class of manufactured, products
that is competing in foreign countries
with the productions of those coun.
tries, and that is selling cheaper there
than at home, aud that could with
staud all foreign com petition without
the present tariff. .In other words,
the East wants relief from high-priced
food, clothing and building materials,
while on the other hand, the Weal
wants relief from theexactions of thd
large .manufacturing trusts. A sub
ject Involving controversies of this
nature and that niu-l be adjiistu.1 i n
committee befoie the bill comes on
the floor ot the House must nccessar
ily be deferred either t a special ses
sion or tho next regular session."
"What do you think of the propos
al to have the whole matter thresheJ
out ny a tariff commission?"
Mr. Tongue replied by asking an
oiner question: 'l. you thiuk ills
