Mitchell, one of the millionaire lum
ber kings of Michigan, and for the
last two years a resident of 8aa
Diego, Cal., committed suicide on
August 1Z. while mentally deranged,
by leaping Into the aea from the deck
of the Coptic, en route to Hongkong.
Mitchell was surrounded by a group
of passengers at the time he made hU
plunge, and was apparently the gay
est of the party. In bis fall his head
struck one of the davit guy , ropes
with great force, and It is presumed
that he was stunned by the impact.
The vessel was Immediately brought
about and lifeboats lowered, but the
body did not ccme to the surface. The
deceased was 61 years of age. a na
tive of Cadillac. Mich. lie leaves a
wife and two children, a boy and a
girl, aged rejioectively It ami 12

On August 9 Mr. Mitchell, accom
panied by Dr. C. E. Miller of Cadillac
and a medical attendant from this
city, embarked on the Coptic for a
trip around the world. Mitchell had
eben sufferer from nervous pros
tration for three years previous. .,
Upon reaching Honolulu Dr. Miller
and the medical attendant left the
Coptic and took pannage on the steam
er Sonvna, which arrived in port
yestcn.y.
The deceased, during his brief real
denes within California, became ex
tremely interested In the local lumber
Industry.' He was one of a syndicate
which made largo purchases of timber
lands In 8hasta county, and was in
strumental In a movement having ao
Its object the control of the McCloud
river lumber belt.
TRY TO COVER UP CRIME.
Murderers Try to Incinerate Body of
Their Victim.
Posatello, Aug. 26. The body of a
man, half consumed by Are, was fotind
near Downey station Monday after
noon. A telephone message was re
ceived from Coroner Bean giving the
details of what seems to have been
a murder,
. The remains were found a mile and
a half north of Downey station and
have since been Identified as thore of
a man named Ilruce, well known aa
a printer In Pocatollo. When found
the body was a matts of roasting flesh,
blackened almost beyond all recogni
tion. A burning tlo lay across the
body and a burning cloth was over
the face, . Burning ties had been
heaped around the body and in a lit
tle mora time would have been com
pletely con.mmcd.
Coroner Bean In bis Investigation
found three bad cuts on the head, one
above the left eye and two on the
back of tho head. From the position
of. the body lican Is confident that
the man was murdered probably by
tramps and then placed among the
burning ties in order that all evidence
of the crime might be obliterated.

Tamaqua. Pa., Aug. 26. Not since
the Inauguration or the anthracite coal
miners' strike have the United Mine
workers had so many pickets petroling
the Panther Creek valley as Monday.
Every road and path leading to the
collieries was guarded In an effort to
persuade the non-union men not to go
to work. No new rocrults were added
to the working force, and quite a
numlier were turned back. The extra
vigilance was due to the rumor that
it is the Intention of the Lehigh Coal
and Navigation company to cut coal
as soon as sufficient men can be se
cured. An official of the company admitted
that practical minors are hard to pro
cure and that none of the coal com
panies Is able to operate any of Its
mines, for this rcanon. .
Boy Shot at Pottsville.
Pottsvtlle, Pa., Aug. 26. Oeorge
Wheatley, an outaide foreman at the
Brookside colliery of the Philadelphia
and Reading Coal and Iron company,
is under ftOOO ball, charged with
shooting Oeorge Bearer, aged 19.
Wheatley says he was followed
through the streets by a crowd of
strlkera and sympathizers, who Jeered
and hooted him. Becoming enraged,
be fired Into the crowd, the bullet- hit
ting Bearer. Wheatley was formerly
a mine boss.
