A teamster named Frank Miller
was killed at Cornelius Monday
morning. He was In the timber
and had a load of four-foot cord wood

was about to start to the road. The
place where he was is a side hill.
The driver was on the lower sido and
as he started his team the wagon
tipped over on him; When found
about an hour later he was dead.
The deceased had been at Cornelius
about ten days, was 40 or 45 years
old and had no family as far as
known. He came here from Chleo,

the council at its meeting on Wed
nesday last and was adopted aud the
ordinance passed. It was said a few
days ago that Corbctt aud Ladd in
terests would ci j )iu the company
when it commences to build its road,
but it I not believed that an action
so unpopular will be undertaken, or
if entered upon would Ut successful.
It I understood that work will be
commenced at once and the Sine
completed next year, though the
Portland franchise allows two years
for construction. The line is lo be
well constructed and well equipped.
The coaches both for passengers aud
for freight are elegant. The route
out ol Portland is not !y the Cornell
road, but between that road and the
B irnes road. The car lino loops
arouud the dividing ridge. A line I
projected Irom Portland ea"tward to
Gresliaio, which is claimed to be a
good proposition, but we know thai
the line into Washington county will
tap a country twice as large and su
perior everyway. It now looks as
though tho Hue Is assured; the Wash
ington people can materially aid the
work by promptly and cheerfully
granting the right of way through
our territory. Agents will wait upon
citizens immediately for the purpose
of obtaining tiieir consent to the pas
sage of the road along side their pro

county, Amos Griffith aged 82 years,
11 mouths, 23 day.
The deceased was horn in Bourbon
county, Kentucky, June 19, lHltt,
where m lived uulilypung manhood
when he moved to Illinois, from
thence to Missouri and then to Ore
gon In 1852. He took the Griffith
donation land claim where he baa
continuously resided until death, ex
cept fchort absences spent at the
mines and other places. The de
ceased was a member of the Christian
church over 30 years whose ordinan
ces he strictly observed. His life
was that of a consistent christian.
His wife preceded him to the beyond
by 33 years. Two Hons survive, F,
M. and W. A. Griffith.
The remains were burled in the
Laurel cemetery. The funeral ser
vices were conducted by Elder J,
Saper. ' '
