county court has accepted the survey
cf that part of the road which lies In
Douglus county, and has declared it

A. D. Hopper was In Sclo last
wetk looking after the business of
the flax mills. Ho expressed him
self as well pleased with the work-
ings of the mill and ' with the
outlook. The market for high
grade fiber ie good. The mill is ..
running full time. ' The company
will endeavor to rent ground and
r6 Its own flax the coming season,
or at least that part of it that is not
contracted for. They have straw suf
ficient on hand at present to keep
them running until April.
The Cascade. Coal Mining . Com
pany is preparing for active opera
tions to begin Monday. Machinery
has been purchased in Euirene and
Portland aud is now being shipped
to Creswell, from which place it will
be removed, to the company's mine.
The power will be steam, and the
holler h a Eugene product. The
engine and pump, will come from
Portland. A shaft will be sunk Im
mediately to tup the vein of coal.
It w ill . probably be 30 days before
the vein will be tonched.
Cot tape Grove, in Lane county, is
thrifty town of about the same
size as Hill-tboro, but some of the
people are willing lo permit their
neighbor to bear all the burdens of
government. In pursuance of their
plan, the "good citizens" stayed at
home Ihe day of the school meeting,
but the "Mossbacks" went and de
feated the tax levy. As a result the
public school was closed, three hun
dred children run the streets and the
town's eye Is black. In truth, are
they not the true "Mossbacks" who
stayed at home and allowed the
others to job them?
W, A. Wooliever reports that
while crossing In over the Coquille
bar last week the steamer Mandalay
struck and swung around broadside
to the sea. One of the small steam
pipes was broken by the concussion
caused : by heavy . seas breaking
against her side, and the staterooms
and cabins were filled with uteain.
It was found by s'Hinding that there
was less than four feet of water
where the vessel struck. Although
in a dangerous position, the steamer
was, by tho good management of
Captain Reed, worked off the shoal,
and reached Bandon without further
trouble.
The directors of the Coquille pub-
