Incidents publihhed in Pari Figoro,
July 2t. It ia known In diplomatic
history aa "Hchaebele affair."
Schaebele was arrested fifteen year
ago by a German detective named
Uuutach on the French-German front-
ter. The difficulties which followed
thla arrent produced a war acare in
Europe.
Serious complications were happily
averted by the judlcioua Interference
of Prince Munater de Derneberg, at
that time German ambasaador to the
French capital though at that hour
at home on leave.
According to M. Fan re, Franco's
assertion that Schaebele had been ar-
rested on French territory wan bitter
ly contested by Prince Bismarck
At this point of the proceeding) a
. letter from Gautach to Schaehele
summoning the latter to a confer
ence was found. This letter waa
Immediately sent to M. Ilerbette,
French ambassador to Berlin, but the
latter had found Prince Bismarck so
unfavorably dlapnaed that heheaitated
to Intr st such an imortaut doc
ument to his tender mercies. At thia
juncture Prince Munater de l)enie-
burg, who was visiting in Berlin, call
ed upon M. Herbette, saving he ar
dently desired the maintenance of
peace, and offering to aid the French
minister. When he waa shown the
Gautach letter the German diplomat
aald:
"Give it to me; confide it to me; 1
will bring it back at 3 o'clock."
M. Herbette hesitated to turn over
the letter. Prince Munater demanded
the original. M. Herbette finally
consented and Intruated France's
trump card to the German ambasna-
dor at Paris.
Prince Munster went to Prince Bin
marck and showed him the Gautach
letter, Biamarck angrily asked the
diplomat what buisneaa he had to at'
tend to M. Uerbette'a coiniiiidims
Munater firmly replied that he had
only come to warn Biamarck) and
that he was goinjr to show the letter
to the emperor of Germany. This
he did. The emperor read the letter
carefully and said:
"Then Mchaehel waa under a flag
of truce. If we do not release that
man no one will ever dare to send a
flag of truce into a Prussian camp.
He must be released. I will at once
give the order, and you can Ml Her
bette what I have done."
A few hours later Bismarck set
Schaebele at liberty, and the war
. cloud rolled away.
