The band boys of Washington
county are making all preparation to
attend the State Hand Tournament
to In held in Albany on Monday and
Tut-a lay, June 5 and 6. The hands
from Ihia county will he murt'ed into

the leadership of W.J. Wall, who la
known as one of the most efficient
teacher ami director of bands In the
Hlate. Mr. Wall expects to jave
over Ml inointxTs in the new organ
ization and he Intends that the band
.shall do ilself and the county credit
at the tournament. The local bands
are each doing full practice work and
din in the remainder of this month

first one takes place tomorrow even
ing. The city of Albany Is making
great preparations to entertain

The HillslMiro hand will give their
first oM'ii air concert from the band
stand this evening. As the boys are
at considerable excuse for new
music and uniforms they are planing
to give an entertainment in the near
future to raise funds to aid them in
preparing for the tournament. It Is
exectcd that the cliircns of Hills,
boro and vicinity will show a spirit
of generosity towards the band and
give it audi aid that it may he a
credit to llillslairo and Washington
county.

The Home Dramatic Club gave an

music, songs, dialogues, recitations

taking part acquitted themselves iu a
most creditable manner. The club

Witnesses at the trial of Haines
charged with disturbing public wor
ship testified in ls-ha!f of their friend
that it was Wm Harjier who was lo
blame. William was promptly ar
rested. He said he had attended
church three limes this year and on
one occasion he had misbehaved, hut
whether the time was the one when
Haines was present is not stated.
Inquire Smith fined him sixtisn

ever came into court again on such a
charge he would send him to jail for
six months.
Prof. Hopkins, an authori'y on in

here for several months, tho he does
not expect to desert his Nebra-ka
home.

eran ami brother of D. T. Phillips, of

Infantry returned home last Monday
evening, nis term of enlistment hav
ing expired. He is a native of Wash
ington county and when at home
lives near Gieucoe. W hen the war
broke out he was with his company
iu Alaska, but it was recalled and
sent to Manila with the fir-t expedi-
tiou that went last summer under the
convoy of the Charleston. Private
lyiudeu wore his brown cot ten uni
form which was warm enough for the
Philippine climate but rather thin
for Oregon. He was not in any of
me campaigns against the Spaniards
tut soldiers who have been in C uba
aud are now la Luzon state that they
preier to nght the Spaniards. A Fii
ipino is treacherous and they will as
sassinate their guard tho they know
they will tie killed the next minute.
Mr. Louden praises the rush and dar
ing of the Washington and Tennessee
volunteers with whom he was most
intimately connected.
John W. Perkins, a private in Co.
II, 21 Oregon, returned home last
Ibursday. He did not come home
because he wanted to come, but be
cause he had to. He had been sick
and iu the hospital for a tedious
spell, and rsuaut to the policy of
the government to discharge and
send home sick soldiers, Private
Perkins was discharged. There was
quite a ball of red tape connected
with the matter and before Ihe dis
charge got to Manila young Perkins
nad recovered and joiued .his coin
pany. He was out of the service
several days before he knew it,
Perkins says the soldiers do not want
io come home till tney have couqur-
ed a peace. They want the glory of
completing what they have so gal
lantly commenced and by so great
labor carried along so successfully.
