"Jack, yon cowardly brntel You

I waa disappointed in Jack, bnt un
doubtedly my reference to the police
waa unjnHt and uncalled for.
On reaching (Skeleton creek, which
waa a aeriea of water holea in deep,
thickly wooded hollow, we pulled off
the track and pitched our camp. Juat

There ix no xi-u or mark on the face

Nornh Mackenzie went over to pat
one of the horses, and Jack, taking the
bridle ont of my hand, walked off to
catch the roan, lie fore doing so he aaid
to me in an nxide which I considered
jnxt a little fc audible: "lunik out for

1 walked toward the camp with her,
wondering not a little at the keenuess
of her perceptive faculties What a
pretty picture thia daughter of the bush
made, dr eased, a aba waa now, in her
simple bnt daintily made walking drena
of soma light material. There waa the
delicate bloom of health in her clear
skin and it luster in her eyes. There
was no question about her face being a
striking one; it was calculated to rivet
the attention of the beholder at first
sight for there waa more in it than
mere physical beauty there waa that
higher attractiveness which men call
indiwlnality or character and yet
dinipite her many strange and uncon
ventional ways, no one con Id say she
lacked that greatest charm of all wo
uianlineca. But still, aa yet I frankly
confess, I could but imperfectly under
stand her. Hiss waa already interesting
me in a way that I hardly cared to ad
mit to myself.
Just before we reached the squatter's
camp aha pointed out Savile, the cook.
waited tnuMird the tamp with her.
who waa busying himself erecting a
bough shed. lie waa 8 feet 4 inches in
height broad in proportion and bad a
ronnd, good natnred, sensible face.
"I must tell you about Savile," ahe
said. "He haa been with us since I
waa a child, and I should lika you to be
on good terms with him. Ilia heart is
nearly aa big aa hia body yoo needn't
laugh. lie ia one cook in a thousand
and doesn't want for shrewdness, but
he haa a hobby or two toys, for in
stance" "Toys!" I atared at the son of Anak.
"Yea, toys: he spends heaps of mon
ey in aending to Melbourne and Sydney
for all aorta of 'Yankee notions,' paper
anakea that fly, talking dolls and
things. You mrvito't laugh at him. you
know. "
"Not If I can help It Tell me of an
other weakness. " I had an uneasy im
pression that ahe waa making fan of
me.
"Yoa mustn't call them weaknesses
so many of na are built that way
Let's call them partialities. I've got
ever ao many. Well, Havilo's second
biggest one's hia dog, Samson, and, of
course, ha thinka there'a not another
like it in Australia. I know myself
there isn't You'll enjoy the poodle,
however, when he tella yoo how it kill
ed the rat at Charters Towers. The
place doesn't signify it'a always shift
ing about like the story. Iiat yoo're
bound to love Savile. I do, ever ao
much. "
I came to the conclusion that I also
would take to Savile. Apart from rec
ommendations of a like nature, I al
ways, npon principle, cultivate a
friendly relationship with cook.
We found the squatter seated close to
the wagon ; one of the aides of the tar
paulin bad been lifted np and pitched
like the roof of a veranda, so he sat in
the shade.
"I've brought yoo some one to talk
to, dad, " exclaimed the girl. "I must
go and see Elsie. She went off toward
her tent which, with sides gathered
up, waa covered with long leafy boughs,
ao aa to keep the occupants cooL
"Good morning, Parker," aaid the
squatter cheerily. "I'm glad you're not
traveling today. " lie motioned me to
sit down beside bim.
I talked with him about an hoar and
found bim well informed. He waa pre
cise in his ways, but the innate kindli
ness of the man robbed hia sjieech of
any suggestion of pedantry. He waa in
the middle of an argument when hia
daughter came oat of her tent looking
amused.
"Ho, dad!" ahe cried.
The squatter started and looked ap
prehensive, as if he had been caught
in the act of exploiting some unortho
dox doctrine. "Well, my deart" he
stammered.
"Why didn't yoa put np a notice in
the morning that yon were going to
lecture T Then we'd all have had a
chance of 'attending. Yoa are unkind,
daddy, dear. "
"Really, my dear"
Dut the girl interrupted him; she
hail heard a dog whining behind her.
and, turning, cried sharply:
"Now, then. Snowball, what for yoa
coolah alouga that fellow puppy dog t
UaiU that fellow aavey no patter tnin

The change from the talk of an edu
cated English girl to the giliN-risb of a
black gin waa ao complete and startling
that I could hardly believe it was she
who had spoken. The black fellow, who
had been punishing his dog for appro
priating some food left on the ground,
desisted to do a black fellow justice
he seldom iU treats his dog and went
off to join his comrade, who was at
some little distance beneath a shady
Iron bark tree. He tried to look uncon
cerned; ao doea a dog when it has stol
en something.
The gray nin-t have broken his hob
bles and strayed a considerable distance
from camp; it waa a great pity that
Jack had to go horse hnuting while 1
waa enjoying congenial cominmy. Sa
vile had begun to clatter the pots and
pane abont I knew that soon the fever
would again be npon me: so declining
the repeated invitation of the aqnstter
to stop and have some dinner I walked
quickly away It waa my wish to be
alone. In tbcae attacks of delirium I
did not rare that any one shonld hear
me talking nonsense. Oh. thia curse of
my life, this fever that had got rue in
its grip I
I hurried to my camp and seised a
blanket The ague waa on me already,
and I waa becoming cold aa death even
nnder that warm ton. It mnst have
kHected my head, (or oa taking the
raovaa water bog I walked down ana
along the creek bottom, then ptmck out
from it into the bnch again, taking no
note of where I wandered and raring
lesa. I threw myself down eomewhi-re.
Then 1'iT some time I fancied myself
alone in the arctic regions, lying on a
field of ice, with nothing to cover me,
and freezing to death.
CHAPTER IV
ODDER EWIUJXStla.
In the period of di-lirioin which fni
lowed I experienced some curious delu
siona. So powerfully did they impress
me at the time tuat even now I can re
call them distinctly.
When I became alive to the present
it waa only to be conscioua of suffering
of a sure, wearied body stretched on
the rack of a fierce fever and consumed
by a burning thirst My anva water
bag waa empty, bnt there waa not
strength enough left in me to go end till
it again. Aa for the black who prowled
about in that dangerous country, they
bardly gave me a thought liut the
snake, that waa forever poining itself
above me a if to strike filled me with
a terror which in vain I atruggled
agaiuxt
There waa a mocking assumption of
superior wisdom or cunning in iU lock
Would the end never come? In my hor
ror to break tbe spell I cried aloud.
But it waa a human voice that an
swered. "All right Mr. Parker. Why. don't
yoa know me? You look as if you'd
seen a snake or a black fellow I What
do yoo take me for?"
"I believe yoo are something un
canny, " 1 gaxiMxl
Tbe glittering eyea of theaerpent had
changed into the calm, dark eyea of the
sqnatter'a daughter, and her soft, clear
voice it was one of her great charm
came from the place where the snake
bad hissed.
