result is that business Is good in

kept up, and schools well maintained.
What Is done In Ihtllas is done by
sheer force of energy and enterprise.
The town enjoys no special advanta

"pull" of any kind. It simply at
tends to its own business and depends
on itself, wanting noun of its forces In
ambitions and longings for the una!

WILL USE THE HA YOSET
Last week the , governors of South
Dakota and Nebraska addressed the
war department at Washington de
manding the discharge of the volun
tcers furnlfhcd by those states who
are now serving with MacAlister and
Lawton in the Philippines.
The demand is baxed on the ground
that their term of enlistment expired
when the ratifications of the peace
treaty were exchanged, and that the
present conflict in the Philippines la
in opposition to liberty and In the Id
terest of capitalism.
The Chicago Tribune recognising
the incident as a political scheme to
advance the Interests of Ihe anti ex
pansionists desired to know how far
the scheme extended and to that end
addrexMpd an enquiry to several of
the governors to the north-went who
nave soldiers ti Manila. Uov. Ueer
of ;Oregon replied la Itw. ringing
word which reflect the sentiment of
oar people.
"There U quite a general wish
among the people of Oregon that the
volunteer soldiers of the state may
sooo be returned from Manila, but
not fur the reason Intended by the
governors of the states you mention,
to-wit that 'the present conflict in the
Philippines to in opposition to
liberty and la the interest of capit
alist! .
Thereto some Justice In asking
for the return of the volunteers, now
that the war with 3pain, for which
they eolLted, has been honorably
concluded, and that the spasmodic
difficulty yet lingering in the Philip
pines thou Id be Burprensed by the
regular ariny of Ihe Uuited Htaies,
which to amply equipped for Ihe por.
pose. It to believed, bowevtr, that
this wish la confined to those of us
who are at home, as the Oregon boys
at the front quite generally expret-a a
desire to remain there until the diffi
culty to settled.
"Our people take no stock In the
declaration that the conflict in the
Philippines is waged in opposition
te liberty and in the interest of cap
Itallam.' The very met who make
this charge now are the ones who,
Utile more than a year ago. were
loudly accusing President McKinley
of 'cowardice and of delaylng the
war with Spain' in the 'interest of
capitalism,' as represented by Hpan
lsh bond-bolders.
"The Iselzlng of the Philippines
waa an Incident of that war wholly
unforseenby anybody, applauded by
every patriotic citizen at that time,
and they could not now lie relin
quished without a taint on our na
tional weekntss.
"The charge that Jthe American
flag is waving over a conflict In the
Philippines Iu opposition to liberty
and In Ihe Interest of capitalism'
savors very much of a spirit of dem
agogy to which the poople of Oregon
are habitual strangers, and which
find no lodgment In their minds at
this time."
